Todays Wednesday Wisdom is from Rio Annaiah, in our #Australia office. People often tell me how lucky I am to have worked in multiple countries early in my career. Whenever I hear that, I think of Seneca's quote, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." This reminds me that "luck" isn’t just chance; it’s the result of being ready when opportunities arise. In essence, what we often call “luck” is not merely a chance occurrence. It is the result of careful and persistent preparation meeting the right circumstances. It encourages individuals to focus on constant improvement and readiness so that when opportunities arise, they can act decisively and effectively. Here are some key pointers which I think are essential to influence your personal and professional growth. Preparation is Key: Whether it’s through education, skill-building, mentorship, or experience, being well-prepared equips you to make most of opportunities. - Influence Your Own Luck: Rather than viewing luck as a random occurrence, you can influence your own luck through diligent preparation. When opportunities arise, those who are prepared are in the best position to seize them. - Opportunity Recognition: When you are knowledgeable and skilled, you are more likely to see potential in situations that others might overlook. - Maximizing Potential: You won’t waste time getting ready when an opportunity arises because you are already equipped to act. - Resilience and Adaptability: These qualities allow you to adjust to new opportunities and challenges as they arise. However, I do think the proverb underscores that effort and hard work are essential components of success. It’s not just about waiting for the right opportunity but actively working to be ready for it. Moving to a new country is an adventure, but building a career in a foreign land? That’s an entirely different challenge! I’ve recently joined the Mitt Liv AB (svb) mentorship program that guide foreigners in Sweden to find their way into the Swedish job market —and it’s been eye-opening! Coming from Brazil, I was used to a work culture where technical skills are everything. You’re expected to stand out by proving you’re the best—showcasing expertise, being super proactive, and sometimes even taking a harsh approach to highlight your value. Being a workaholic is often rewarded as a sign of dedication. In Brazil, even how we communicate reflects our passion. We speak with energy, use our hands to emphasize points, and enthusiastically express our readiness and desire for the job. It feels so positive to us that it’s hard to imagine it might come across differently in other places. But in Sweden, it’s a completely different story. Here, soft skills take the spotlight. The mindset is that technical skills can be taught, but the ability to collaborate, align with company values, and contribute to a positive team culture is priceless. It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room but about showing humility, making space for others, and thriving as part of a collective. And work-life balance? It’s also key—your hobbies and family time matter as much as your career. This shift has taught me that succeeding abroad isn’t just about skills—it’s about learning the unwritten rules of a new society. From writing a CV to how to behave, present yourself and build connections in a way that resonates with the local work culture. Through this program and my mentor, Chizoba Oguchi, I’m adapting and growing, ready to embrace these differences and hope to inspire others to do the same. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to join our team for a retreat at the American River 🌊. While the entire experience was unforgettable, the highlight for me was rafting — a first-time adventure that left me with lasting insights. As we navigated the river, each stretch presented a unique challenge. The rapids varied in intensity, requiring us to adapt quickly and stay coordinated. It wasn’t long before I started drawing parallels between our journey on the water and the path we’re carving out as a team and organization. Here are a few lessons I took away from the rapids: 1. Teamwork is everything. Just like paddling in synchrony is crucial to steering through turbulent waters, collaboration is key in overcoming challenges at work. 2. Camaraderie, adaptability, and resilience are non-negotiable. The river throws surprises at you, and much like in our professional journey, staying adaptable and leaning on each other makes all the difference. 3. Control is only part of the equation. There are moments when you have to take charge, and others when you must let go and surrender to the flow — in life and in work, knowing when to do each is vital. This experience left me inspired and with a deeper appreciation for the power of teamwork and resilience, both on the river and in the workplace. 🌊🚀

My summer job was the best. Patrolling the land and waters of the National Capital Commission - Commission de la capitale nationale. By foot, bike, truck or boat, whether in the summer or the winter, it was my duty to ensure our region's natural parks were respected and conserved, and that everyone could enjoy them safely. While I didn't hold any real authority, every day presented a new opportunity to develop my skills. → 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀-𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 On my first day of work, I noticed a man crouched over from his car, when I went to check on him, he was showing signs of having a heart attack. Remembering my first-aid training, I asked him to get in safe position, while immediately calling for an ambulance. He was saved. → 𝗗𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆 International conflict arose in the BBQ area, where two large families, of two distinct cultures complained about each other. I brought together the two leaders of the groups and came to a compromise where one would turn down their music a tad, and the other would share one of the tables they were holding up. A global dispute was avoided and many smiles were found. → 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 Being a parking-lot attendant can be boring, especially on a rainy day. As the team's supervisor, I'd drive from one location to another to relieve my colleague of their duties for a few minutes while they competed on a brain-teaser game, to see how they measured against their colleagues. When we got together, it was always a source of fun. It was also during those slow days that I learn to connect with each of them, allowing us to be more efficient as a team, as they were enabled to operate with more autonomy on sunny [and busy] days. "As a kid, beach outings with my family were some of my happiest memories. The sight of ships in the distance and waves crashing captivated me. Later, as I was interning, I had the chance to see cargos from all over the world up close. It was then that I truly realised Singapore’s role as a global transshipment hub. There’s something remarkable about seeing it all unfold with my own eyes. Stepping into the maritime industry felt almost natural for me. However, transitioning from school to the real world was a different kind of voyage. Textbook knowledge wasn’t enough. Navigating real projects required time management and problem-solving on the spot. Given my lack of experience and my introverted nature, I felt nervous at first, especially when networking with experienced industry professionals. As cliché as it sounds, I believe in the saying, ‘If there’s a will, there’s a way.’ Over time, I learned to stay open, ask for help and never stop learning. Seminars and conferences all became opportunities for growth, contributing to my career health. Now, as part of the energy transition team at Jurong Port, I’m exploring sustainable fuels like biofuels. Speaking with people across the green energy supply chain, from upstream to downstream, broadened my perspective. We’re all working towards a common goal: creating a greener future, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of this impactful effort. Recently, I heard that otters have been appearing around Jurong Port. They’re my spirit animals — energetic, resilient and always moving forward. I remember watching them at the zoo one weekend, and I could’ve stood there for hours. Like them, I’m driven by challenges. The harder the task, the more motivated I am to find solutions. Challenges keep my job exciting and transform it from a daily routine into a career that fuels my growth and passion. Today, the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea still remind me why my heart will always belong to maritime. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧** As I wake up this morning on my last day in Cartagena, Colombia, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable lessons I've learned from observing the local fishermen. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐘𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤** I've witnessed firsthand how these fishermen start their day at the crack of dawn, ready to seize the opportunities the early morning offers. It's a powerful reminder that our most productive moments often occur when we embrace the freshness of a new day. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝟐: 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤** Watching these fishermen operate their nets highlighted the importance of collaboration. They work seamlessly as a team, each person understanding their role and contributing to the collective success. It underscores that true achievement often relies on effective teamwork. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝟑: 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬** While observing the fishermen, I noticed surfers navigating the waters around their fishing nets. Despite these distractions, the fishermen remained steadfast and undeterred from their goal. This taught me the importance of maintaining focus despite external challenges and distractions. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝟒: 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞** Fishing is a test of patience. It requires waiting for the right moment and persisting through difficulties. The fishermen exemplified resilience and perseverance in their pursuit of a successful catch, reminding me that achieving goals often demands persistence and a steadfast belief in the process. **𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝟓: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐤** Once the fish are caught, the job is far from over. I observed how the fishermen diligently prepared to sell their fish to local customers. This final step in their process reinforced the importance of seeing tasks through to completion and delivering quality results. As I prepare to depart Cartagena, I carry these lessons with me and I want to share them with you all.
