Happy 10th birthday #4YFN!!! Ready to celebrate 10 years of a successful event highlighting innovation, startups and investment. I remember very well the very first edition, in a corner of Fira in Plaza España. And now, it's so much bigger and fully part of MWC. What a ride! But what makes me especially happy this year is that one of the main topics is... digital health! with dedicated sessions on the 4YFN main stage but also more sessions organized by Barcelona Health Hub, AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, ECHAlliance - The Global Health Connector and others... mainly on 27th and 28th. I'm especially looking forward to my session AI Innovation as the Catalyst for Healthcare Transformation on 27th, at 12.30 on Earth stage, hall 8.0. There will also be a digital health pitch competition where 1 o the 5 finalists will be recognized startup of the year; as well as some dedicated mentoring sessions where mentors like me, Mo Zouina, Agathe Acchiardo, 🇺🇦 Maren Lesche, Iolanda Marchueta and others will sit down with entrepreneurs to offer them some guidance and many cool startups to visit on the exhibition floor in hall 8.0. A very packed week ahead, with many sessions to attend, many meetings already planned with old and new friends, visiting from across the world but very very much looking forward to it all as I'm sure it will be a very memorable one. Agree with AI Automation completely, the 2nd wave will be focused on the automation of clinical workflows and pathways, the first wave was RPA and repetitive back office functions. Excellent meeting last week in Basel, on innovation and digital health during which I have been honored to discuss in a roundtable how pharma and startups can collaborate to support innovation, and how to mitigate the difficulties that startups may encounter when attempting to partner with large healthcare companies. #digitalhealth

ICYMI... my column in the newsletter yesterday: Almost exactly one year ago, behemoth US healthtech conference HLTH, organised by the same people who put on fintech conference Money20/20, held a controversial launch party in Munich ahead of its 2024 event in Amsterdam that kicked off this week — its first on European soil.   The party took place on the first night of Bits & Pretzels’s healthtech conference, also in Munich, and drew several attendees (including this reporter) from that event’s speaker dinner for its own bash. The party was packed and when I arrived a baying mob of conference goers who weren’t wearing wristbands adorned with the HLTH logo were being turned away at the door.    It was a bold entrance to Europe — and it was a sign of things to come. This week its main event in the Dutch capital is similarly showy. Exited founders are playing 8am DJ sets in the “vinyl lounge”; there’s a gaming area with pinball and air hockey; and the Libertines headlined an aftershow party yesterday evening. One VC told me that “everyone is here”.    But one thing that’s struck me is the absence of founders who everyone is talking about on the speaker bill. While a lot of the chatter beforehand was about Babylon’s Ali Parsa being there, he pulled out before doors opened. I haven’t heard much about upcoming digital healthtech darlings who have raised or are about to raise a sector-defining funding round.   Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of promising startups on stage creating excited chatter off it. Virtual ward startup Doccla, alongside AI copilots for doctors Corti and Nabla are among the few that came up in conversations. The companies that everyone was talking about when they burst onto the scene a few years ago — the likes of Kry, Doctolib and Owkin — were also there.   But digital health startups hitting some serious, unicorn valuations for the first time now? They weren’t at HLTH Europe because, currently, they don’t exist in European digital health, VCs tell me. The funding figures for the sector paint a telling picture. Digital health startups picked up $1.2bn across Europe in 2023, according to Dealroom — the lowest amount since 2018 and a long drop from the record $3bn in 2021. Yes, funding in European tech fell across the board, but it fell further in digital health. Halfway through 2024 the numbers aren’t looking more positive. One seasoned founder, who’d just managed to close a round, told me that raising now was more difficult than during the 2008 financial crisis. So where’s the money gone? What an incredible journey we‘ve had with URBAN TECH Project 🇪🇺. And it’s not over yet! 🏆 When HealthX Future was selected for the #MVP phase of the program last year from over 1,400 submissions from startups across Europe, we were very proud. After completing the MVP development, we were sent one more round by an international jury of experts for a 6-month pilot phase, making it to the final 30 winning startups (or the top 2% of the program). 🚀 To top it all off, we as the Top20 team have now received a Market Discovery Voucher in the final program phase, so we will explore our idea in other European markets, e.g. 🇸🇪 and 🇳🇱, but will focus primarily on the care market in our neighboring country Austria 🇦🇹. We are now developing a platform that can be used to organize the entire day-to-day care process. Many of the proposals are good but we forget the most important ones: - We need to have the industrial perspective and better understand the market needs, to do that its key with a tighter cooperation between Academia and the Hospitals with concrete initiatives. - Create the pre-requisites to attract companies to Sweden, otherwise what happens today is that the same companies are just moving around. Therefore, its key that the politicians understand the weight and potential of Lifescience in a bigger concept and creates incentives for international companies to get stablished in our Region/Country i.e. Tax reductions, establishments support, etc and to be able to meet the demands of needed competences with LifeScience. We are today too much focused on Astra and other bigger companies, its not wrong with that, but if we are going to take the lead and create a LifeScience leading Industry we need to see at a bigger context and pay attention to the trends and How the market is moving today and not "only" keep the eyes on big Pharma. New areas that are accelerating and developing fast within Lifescience are i.e.: - Personalized Medicine with the help of new techniques as NGS, genomics etc for i.e. cancer treatment and Preventive medicine - We need also to start pushing for a more Proactive HealthCare rather than a Reactive Sick care. There are many initiatives popping up in our incubators and among the stablished companies. I wish that the discussions became more concrete to really move forward. Beside that we have very good conditions as a homogeneous healthcare, certainty to the Academia and as the case for Gothenburg, access to one of the biggest University Hospitals in Europe. Very much of the focus i.e. in Gothenburg is based on the automotive industry therefore its key that the interest and role of the government in order to create a sustainable strategy for growth and development. The initiative of GoCo Health Innovation City is excellent as an example and is reaching a critical mass where the companies will start getting synergies. I believe that we can aspire even higher and create a BioConvergence Center in Gothenburg where we can work for the future challenges in Medicine combining i.e. biology, AI, Molbio, Electronics, informatics etc etc. It’s so much that we could discuss and address.
