Did you know REEF surveyors collect data on sea turtles? 🐢 While the main focus of the Volunteer Fish Survey Project is marine fish (and in temperate locations, select invertebrates and algae species), you can also record your sea turtle sightings while snorkeling or diving! Simply mark your sightings the same way that you do for fish. Trying to manage not just the operations of Race Rocks but the thousands upon thousands of sea lions that reside within the reserve in the fall is like being a ringleader and a lion tamer blended together. It’s a hilarious balancing act of maintaining order within absolute chaos, with some sea lions having been trained to say yes and no by people to earn a better tip on a tour or for their own sheer entertainment, not considering the consequences of such actions. It’s an ecological reserve so this part of the job is not often understood. Yes, the wildlife has free rain, however, the interior, where the buildings sit, the lighthouse stands and elephant seals lounge and the eco guardian works, the currently lazy and yet at times extremely aggressive sea lions destroy and damage most everything so they must be kept along the borders, the outer rocks of Great Race Rock. The number one reason for this, though, is in fact that there are Native burial cairns. 7 Rings of rocks placed thousands of years ago, ceremoniously, that when sea lions move over them, roll the boulders easily and disrupt the traditions and history to which we do our best to protect. The UK Great Seagrass Survey is encouraging volunteers to carry out seagrass surveys over this Bank Holiday weekend (although the survey can be undertaken throughout the summer). Seagrasses (also known as eelgrasses) create incredible habitats that not only support thousands of animals, reduce erosive wave energy and oxygenate marine sediments but also - and despite only occupying 0.2% of the sea floor - account for 10% of the ocean's capacity to store carbon. In addition, UN Environment Programme has stated that seagrass captures carbon from the atmosphere up to 35 times as quickly as tropical rainforests. Despite being so important, little is known about the distribution of seagrasses around the UK. In response, the marine habitat restoration charity Seawilding and BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club have created the Great Seagrass Survey. We know that ongoing regular maintenance is the key to longevity of heritage assets. But there are always unknowns from inheriting those assets and keeping them in good shape. Whilst this is a major challenge ahead for Scottish Canals it can hopefully can be an opportunity to demonstrate conservation in action to a wide audience who visit the site, and reinforce the need for investment in the historic environment. https://lnkd.in/eqU2AhNf
