I'm honoured to have my thoughts featured in Compliance Week (long link: https://lnkd.in/eF-nyXrW) Summary of my contribution; The NIS2 directive expands its coverage to industries previously not regulated, such as postal and courier services, manufacturing, food production, and research organisations. This means that businesses not traditionally seen as part of "critical infrastructure" could still be affected if they partner with or supply regulated entities. Noncompliance with the directive can lead to significant penalties. Essential organisations could face fines of up to €10 million (or 2% of global annual turnover), while important entities could be fined up to €7 million (or 1.4% of global turnover). Critically, Senior managers may also be banned from managerial roles if their organisation fails to meet deadlines set by supervisory authorities. To comply, businesses should first assess their supply chain security by mapping and tiering suppliers, evaluating their cybersecurity measures, and identifying vulnerabilities. Organisations should then implement strong cybersecurity policies, including tailored requirements for suppliers, security in contracts, and accountability for compliance. Regular penetration testing, real-time monitoring, and incident response plans are vital, along with employee training to prevent human errors that could compromise security.
