Worried about the state of America’s college campuses? Worried cancel culture has ruined American higher education? Sponsor this year’s Disinvitation Dinner to demonstrate the importance of hearing voices that are considered too controversial for today’s college students. This year’s keynote speaker, Vice President Mike Pence, was disinvited from a campus speech because of the riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and faced cancellation efforts at Stanford University and University of Virginia. Even the publication of his memoir inspired a staff revolt at Simon & Shuster. Sponsoring Disinvitation Dinner shows your support for free speech on campus and allows other Buckley Fellows to join this gala evening for free speech in New York. https://lnkd.in/g3DRx-Uj

GOT TRANSFERS? While having a strong pipeline for transfer is important, examining internal opportunities like part of the mission of the Come To Believe Network should also be part of enrollment strategy in #highereducation
CTB provides design grants to universities interested in learning about our 2-year college model with the option to implement the model on their campuses. The design grant includes representatives from universities coming together for a visit to Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago to meet with and learn from my former colleagues, from current students, from alumni, and from early financial supporters of Arrupe. This year’s group also benefited from interactions with leadership at the Dougherty Family College at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Pictured here at Arrupe are leaders from The Catholic University of America; Hollins University; Saint Mary's College; and the University of Detroit Mercy. CTB’s Sam Adams, Gieriet Bowen, Carlos M., and I were delighted to be with our design grant recipients this week in Chicago.

“The mounting chaos on Ivy League campuses in recent days is only the latest chapter in a longer story of America’s elite colleges sabotaging their hard-earned reputations. And now, some prospective students and parents are wondering: Are these really the best places to spend four years and hundreds of thousands of dollars?” ….”Just go to a state school….the premium you’re paying for elite private colleges vs. the better public schools is for social clout and not the quality of the education…..and that’s worth a lot less now that people have figured out that elite higher ed is cringe…..other prospective students are heading south to colleges like the University of Miami, Clemson, Elon, and Georgia Tech, where the weather is nicer and campus life is more relaxed.” “But another factor driving kids away from elite schools is their dominant progressive politics, which many feel deepen cultural divides rather than promoting healthy debate. The old-school vision of colleges serving as an open forum for ideas has been replaced with an us-versus-them mentality, where there’s only one “right” answer to any thorny issue and the winner is the one who shouts the loudest.” Some of the reasons noted are worthy considerations when selecting a college, and considering alternatives to the elite privates. Some others may not be the best reasons to pick a place to go to school.

In this Inside Higher Ed op-ed, Elizabeth H. Bradley, President of Vassar College and member of College Presidents for Civic Preparedness, explores if the breakdown in how we now educate is partially to blame for the current breakdown of dialogue on campuses and if changing how we teach is necessary. What Happens When a College Dies? Birmingham-Southern College will soon be closing its doors for the last time, and as that day approaches, the college's alumni, faculty, staff and other stakeholders are grappling with what its demise means for each of them and how they move forward from here. Unfortunately, the constituents of several other colleges and universities are facing the same questions this year--and undoubtedly numerous other institutions will be confronting those questions during the balance of this decade. Since January 2024 alone, at least 16 institutions have announced they are merging with larger universities or ceasing operations, including Pennsylvania's Cabrini College, Salus University and Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences; New York's Wells College, Medaille College, and College of St. Rose; and Goddard College in Vermont. It is clear that the list will continue to grow. #collegeclosures #collegesanduniversities #highereducation #highered #privatecolleges #higheredleadership #higheredfinances #alumni #covidimpacts

Representing Berkeley Underground Scholars, I had the privilege of attending the Mt. Tamalpais College Resource Fair at San Quentin State Prison, where I engaged with incarcerated students eager to continue their education upon release. During this event, I connected with a student from East Oakland, set to be released in six months. He was determined to further his education. As someone who has walked a similar path, I shared a condensed version of my journey to show him that continuing education is not only possible but also deeply empowering. My story seemed to resonate with him, reinforcing his commitment to pursuing higher education after release. He asked me, "What's the one piece of advice you'd give me?" I responded, "If you're serious about education and potentially transferring to UC Berkeley, here’s what I suggest: 1. Find Your People: When you choose a community college, actively seek out your support network. Surround yourself with people and programs that align with your goals. 2. Take Advantage of Resources: Look for resources and opportunities designed to help students like you succeed, including Puente, Umoja, Transfer Programs, Honors Scholars Programs, Student Leadership and Government, and Work-Study Opportunities. Your community and these programs will provide invaluable guidance and keep you on track as you navigate the next steps in your academic journey. They’ll help you stay focused and motivated as you work toward your goals." Finally, I emphasized that education is a transformative tool, and with the right support systems, he could realize his dream of attending UC Berkeley—or any university he aspires to."

GOOD RIDDANCE AND TAKE YOUR MARXISTS WITH YOU! Pro-Marxist classes (such as English 308 MARXISM AND LITERARY THEORY) are taught by self-proclaimed Marxists (such as Alys Eve Weinbaum) are a major part of UW. “Marxists at UW” is a registered student organization. Marxist signs frequently appear around the campus. Marxism is a cult of hate espousing “class warfare” and “dictatorship of the proletariat”. It is responsible for 200 million deaths in the 20th century! It has been discredited by total economic failure (in Marxist Cuba today the average MONTHLY salary of a worker is $30-40 dollars U.S.!). UW should not hire Marxists to teach Marxism for the same reasons they should not hire Nazis to teach Nazism. Hate should have no home at UW! 😖
University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce announced Wednesday that she will step down from her leadership role at the conclusion of her second five-year term in June 2025 and return to her faculty position. In her upcoming final year in office, Cauce said she is committed to advancing the work of the UW and ensuring a smooth transition. The impact of her presidency has touched all corners of campus life, enhancing access to higher education for students, advancing research and patient care, uniting disciplines to address global challenges, and fostering the UW’s relationships with communities near and far. President Cauce also championed the Husky Promise, expanding access to higher education for all eligible students in Washington, leading to record increases in enrollment.
