November marks Mental Health Awareness for Men. As someone who has worked in the construction industry for a number of years and having first hand felt the effects of losing a colleague. It comes as no surprise that the industry has one of the highest stats for suicide. This really hits hard, which is why mental health has always been a subject that I couldn’t advocate more. So why is Men’s Health Awareness Month important? Four in five suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35. [1] In 2022, men aged 40 to 54 had the highest suicide rates in the UK. [2] In 2017, 12.5% of men in the UK were experiencing some form of common mental health condition. [3] Nearly three-quarters of adults who go missing are men. [4] Men are nearly three times as likely as women to become dependent on alcohol and three times as likely to report frequent drug use. [5] I urge anyone struggling right now please reach out, you are not on your own. To everyone to just check on that family member, send that friend you haven’t spoken to in a while a text or even call, ask that colleague if everything’s okay if they don’t seem there usual selves. My door is always open, phone always on day or night, please do reach out. 💜

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared October 10th of each year "World Mental Health Day." This year's theme is "Mental Health at Work." The WHO reminds us that, "Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health." Part of our strategic plan reads: "At Red Oak, we commit to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where team members feel encouraged to bring their true, authentic selves to work every day." We know that the work we do can be challenging, and we strive to show up for each other. Today is International Men’s Day, to spark important and meaningful conversations about men’s mental health, well-being, and the challenges many face. These conversations aren't always easy, but they are essential. 💚 It’s so common to hear the phrase, “Don’t suffer in silence.” While it’s true, it’s not always easy to take that first step and ask for help. But here’s the thing, you’re never alone. There are so many incredible organisations and communities ready to support you, no matter what you're going through. A huge thank you to Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for inviting us to be part of the launch of the Men’s Staff Network. It was an honor to share what we’re all about at The Man Cave UK and to talk about why reaching out, when life feels a bit overwhelming is not a sign of weakness but a true act of strength. 💪🔥 Let’s keep breaking the stigma. Let’s keep supporting one another. There’s plenty of theories on where the suicide stigma started… religion… law… language… Perhaps, it started with how hard it is to comprehend suicide. Perhaps, it’s hard to believe that someone wants to die when everything you do is centred on ‘living’. Perhaps, it’s too heartbreaking to consider that our loved ones are in so much pain, that we are not enough for them to want to live. Perhaps, it’s easier to write this complexity off as sin or insanity. And perhaps, this complexity manifested itself in religion, law, and language, perpetuating the problem. If so, does the solution for removing stigma sit in our ability to empathise with those suffering? And if so, does the responsibility rest with the people who’ve suffered, to tell their stories? I think so but I don’t know. Hopefully we get closer to the solution on November 20!

💙 Men's Health Week 2024 💙 Men’s Health Week aims to raise awareness about the health challenges faced by men and promote strategies for better physical and mental well-being. This week encourages men of all ages to prioritise their own health, attend the appointments that have been put off, seek preventive care, and engage in conversations about important health issues. Did You Know? Men are less likely to visit a doctor compared to women. Men in the UK have a 3.5 times higher suicide rate than women. Mental health stigma affects men significantly, leading to higher rates of untreated mental health issues. During our Mental Health First Aid courses we tackle the stigma around men's mental health. It's vital to break down these barriers and encourage open discussions about mental health. Let's spread the word and make men's health a priority.
