Seeing so many AMAZING educators I wish I had myself. If you’ve never seen Kush Bubbar, Ph.D, P.Eng give a talk, you are missing out on an energetic speaker, well spoken, with elegant slides! And what’s more, he talked about System Thinking! How do we teach it to students? What works and what doesn’t? And how to get the to participate in national and international competitions such as Map the System Canada Canadian Engineering Education Association - Association Canadienne De L'Éducation En Génie #SystemThinking #Conference #Engineering #EngineeringEducation

A Martian Simulation Experiment: Life on Mars? Students from St Bernard High School along with Fellow Connor Ballard from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL, have taken a significant step towards understanding the potential to identify life on Mars by conducting a unique experiment using microbialites from Lake Salda, Turkey! These microbialites, which are ancient structures formed by microorganisms, form similar carbonate deposits to those identified on Mars, but the origin of the Martian carbonates is still unknown! The students exposed these microbialites to Martian-like conditions in a stratospheric balloon experiment, simulating the low pressure, temperature, and radiation found on the Red Planet. By analysing the microbialites' response to these harsh conditions, they aimed to gain insights into the survival limits of terrestrial life and the possibility of extraterrestrial microbial communities. The experiment yielded promising results! They detected organic molecules, including those associated with DNA in the microbialites, which deteriorated after exposure to Martian conditions, suggesting that detecting signs of life in Martian carbonate deposits may be difficult at the surface and we may need to focus on deposits shielded from the harsh Martian radiation environment. This study supports the need to return deposits from below the surface to understand if microbial activity could have played a significant role in shaping the Martian landscape. These findings provide insights into the effect of Martian conditions on the preservation of biosignatures, and have implications for the upcoming Rosalind Franklin rover, which hopes to search for signs of life in the Martian subsurface using a 2m drill! I am posting a new article, #126, that has the title of: “God does not lie – versus – Science does not lie.” It is written in the hope that it will help people to decide to be a Christian and who think that they cannot be a Christian because they believe in what science tells them about the way in which the Bible indicates that Noah’s flood is worldwide, which is not true. The article is short and only 11 pages long with two figures. You can access my article at the following link: Nr126Lies2.pdf (csun.edu) Lorence (Larry) Collins (professor of geology emeritus, CSUN)

I am posting a new article on my website, #125, with the title: Critique of Hydroplate Theory by Walt Brown. The word “hydroplate” refers to the “great fountains of the deep” (or springs of the deep) that are mentioned by Moses in Genesis 7:11. In this theory, Brown suggests that half of the water that is found in the oceans in which Noah’s flood supposedly deposited the sedimentary rocks in the Grand Canyon during the one year of the flood came from a huge volume of free water in the Earth’s crust or upper mantle that was ejected as the “great fountains of the deep” at supersonic speeds through cracks in the Earth’s crust (the mid-ocean spreading centers of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans) and pushed the North and South American continents at high speeds away from the European and African continents. The idea that a huge volume of free water could exist in the crust or upper mantle to provide such water to the oceans totally disobeys physical laws but is necessary in Brown’s theory because he wants to make what is said in the Bible to be the Word of God and literally true as it is written. My article explains where he does not know or understand geologic processes. This critique can be accessed at this link. Have you ever imagined a grand, unified theory of mathematics? That's what the Langlands program aims to achieve. Formulated by the Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands in the late 1960s, the program connects the world of numbers with the world of shapes and patterns. It's all about finding connections between two worlds: numbers and symmetries. According to the Langlands Program, for every automorphic form, there's a special kind of symmetry called a "Galois representation." In more technical terms, an automorphic form is a special type of mathematical function that has certain symmetry properties. The values stay the same even when we apply certain transformations to that shape or surface because of the patterns inherent in the numbers and the transformations. In other words, the numbers are invariant under certain transformations. This property is crucial in number theory, particularly in the study of modular forms and their connection to elliptic curves and L-functions. A Galois representation is like a way of showing how numbers and their symmetries are related, using numbers and functions instead of shapes. The Langlands Program explores the connections between shapes (automorphic forms) and transformations (Galois representations).
