More disappointing news this week. The Government has approved the lowest number of school building work requests since its funding system began, leaving many UK schools in disrepair. From tackling issues like RAAC to long overdue essential school improvements, many are feeling the strain. With shrinking budgets and a growing list of schools in need, innovative funding solutions are more crucial than ever. Building Schools for Nothing helps schools navigate these challenges. We specialise in assessing school assets and finding alternative funding avenues. Over the past decade, we've worked with numerous schools and unlocked millions of pounds for both school improvements and brand new facilities, all without costing the schools a penny. If you are curious to read some of our success stories, take a look at our website https://lnkd.in/epGpP9Ne If your school has hit a roadblock with government funding, there's still hope. ⚠ Ministers have stopped funding to make our schools and college buildings safe. 🏫 Schools are in urgent need of a fix-up and this must joined up with schools going zero-carbon by 2030. Without more funding, this will be impossible. Newly elected ministers must change this! @LetsGo_Zero #FundTheFuture https://lnkd.in/es8ry826

The ECA commends Danielle Smith announcement of the Government of Alberta’s School Construction Accelerator Program and its capital commitment of $8.6B. “Teaching, educating our kids, and building schools where they have safe, stable and dependable places to learn - I can’t think of many things more important than that,” said Jen Hancock, Board Chair of the Edmonton Construction Association (ECA). Hancock is a Vice President with Chandos Construction, and a former teacher. “This commitment from the province is just what Alberta families needed to hear. And it’s a long-term commitment to building community infrastructure, which is exactly what our industry has been asking for. There’s a lot to be excited about with this new program.” The announcement follows renewed commitments by the ECA, its provincial partner, the Alberta Construction Association, and the Government of Alberta to improve collaboration between government and industry and better manage the delivery of public projects. ECA President David Johnson MBA LLM said a big part of those solutions includes ongoing support for workforce development initiatives. “The ECA is always looking for ways to help school boards offer more opportunities to young people, and to help present work in the skilled trades as a great career opportunity,” he said, adding the ECA Tools for Schools program improves youth access to skilled trades education, and its TradesLink app connects young tradespeople with one another and potential employers. “Ultimately, the solution to our industry’s labour force pressures, and workforce development, lies in our education systems and our schools. The ECA is committed to developing long-term solutions, and it's encouraging to see that same support from our provincial government with such a substantial commitment.” Learn more on the Alberta Gov. Great to hear that OSM (OSB) continues to be a key MOE property strategy. Impressive stats, in Q1 2024, over 60 percent of new classrooms were initiated as offsite manufacturing, up from under 20% in Q4 2023. A good start to an all-of-government approach to OSM, hoping for similar announcements regarding Defence, Community Housing and Health. **A New Look at How We Run Schools** With recent controversies surrounding rigidity in school policies, it's critical we re-evaluate our approach to education. Take Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy in Hackney, for instance. The school excels in results and behaviour but faces sharp criticism from parents over the emotional impact on pupils. Mossbourne Federation defends their approach, yet, this situation reflects wider concerns about the academy system. Academies, originally established to uplift struggling schools, were believed to be a game-changer. However, critics argue that these institutions lack accountability and may employ overly strict policies. The idea from Labour's past indicative of favouring a balanced coexistence of both academies and local authority schools showcases the need for a diversified strategy. Currently, many multi-academy trusts are thriving, yet the Department for Education measures success differently than parents might. Recent developments suggest Labour's move away from prioritising academies, aiming instead to inspect multi-academy trusts as a whole and introduce new regional school improvement teams. This aims to support all types of schools fairly, highlighting the importance of balanced solutions in our complex education system. What are your thoughts on the future of academies and local authority schools? New SFG20 national survey reveals widespread concerns about school building safety across the UK. The 56% of Brits want local government to prioritize school maintenance, with 1 in 10 parents reporting building safety issues. The study, conducted across 15 UK cities, highlights growing public anxiety following RAAC concrete usage, particularly in regions like London, Leicester, and Birmingham. Experts call for urgent government action to address infrastructure safety and rebuild public confidence.
