There's been a number of CEO resignations so far in 2024 - Expedia, H&M, JetBlue, Sesame Workshop, to name a few. This follows what was a record high of CEO resignations in 2023. Over 1,400 CEOs stepped down between January and September, a 50% rise over the same period in 2022, according to career consultancy Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Whether CEO resignations will surpass 2023 remains to unfold, so far with mixed opinions. What is a given is that there will be more resignations - CEOs and other C-suite leaders, and the way the transitions are handled can build company reputation, or move the needle the other way. This HBR piece by former Mastercard Chairman Richard Haythornthwaite and CEO and Chairman Ajay Banga, "The Former and Current Chairs of Mastercard on Executing a Strategic CEO Succession," published in the Spring of 2021 following Haythornthwaite stepping down as Chairman, and Banga becoming Chairman following 10 years as CEO. The piece is often referred to as a best-in-class example of an effective CEO transition strategy. It's an honest look at the sheer amount of time and strategy that went into the transition, what was accomplished during Banga's tenure, and how Mastercard is positioned for the future. This is part of our DNA, our culture and we strive hard to live by it. This workshop organized through Avatar and conducted by Kannan Hariharan was engaging, informative and in many areas eye opening too. The insights through the case studies were not just interesting, they were profound too. Even though it was a virtual workshop, we had good participation especially in the break-away groups. The rich experience that Kannan brings to the audience is commendable. We may have been driven by a lot of our past learnings and the stereotypes in society. The need of the hour is to be #sensitive, #respectful and #inclusive to each and every person that crosses our path. Every one is a unique individual and if we are true to ourselves we will realize that automatically we will be conscious about the way we behave and speak. A lot of the #unconcsiousbias can be eliminated by being aware, well read and abreast with the way the world is evolving. Change is extremely difficult to imbibe however when you have the will you will definitely find the way. I commit myself to be a D,E&I Ally; to respect and accept everyone just the way they are.
