What's the difference between a #sociallicence approach & a community development/ #wellbeing approach in the energy & infrastructure sectors? I've been critical of the primary emphasis placed on social licence in Australia's renewable energy transition, including by regulators. Quite frankly, I think it is the wrong social objective framing - it can be harmful and goes against what may be in the public interest. It doesn't acknowledge that not all projects are deserving of a social licence and also that some projects that are in the public interest will have social licence challenges. Change isn't always welcomed. By fixating on social licence it can lead to behaviours too of "buying off" communities to offset impacts, downplaying harms. What does an alternative approach look like? See attached some concepts that could be helpful to consider. By centering wellbeing and social value, and considering impacts across various stakeholders, projects & operations can instead prioritise a systematic approach to: - Minimise harm - Maximise benefits - Protect rights - Support equity & fairness In terms of the 5 different social ambitions & framing identified, where are you finding the industry is at or heading to? Communtiy engagement OR Social licence OR Social impact OR Social Value OR Wellbeing/ community development? #socialimpact #communityengagement

🌟 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 & 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞🌟 As local stakeholders expectations keep evolving, companies in the energy and infrastructure sectors are encouraged to transition from a Social Licence to Operate (SLO) to a Community Development/Wellbeing approach. Here are 5 potential reasons to explain the shift: 𝟏. 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: local stakeholders and communities now seek genuine contributions to community wellbeing, not just operational acceptance. 𝟐. 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Long-term community benefits foster sustainable and resilient communities. 𝟑. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲: Prioritizing wellbeing builds deeper trust and stronger relationships. 𝟒. 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: Increasing demands for comprehensive community engagement and sustainable practices. 𝟓. 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Addressing a wide range of community needs leads to more effective solutions. 👉 Moving towards community development enables projects not only meet regulatory standards but also create lasting positive impacts. It’s time to build stronger, more sustainable communities together. #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #EnergySector #Infrastructure #SocialLicence #CommunityWellbeing
