🚀 UART Communication Module Project 🚀 I’m excited to share a project I completed for my last course during my B.Sc. in Computer Engineering. Using the Altera DE0 FPGA board, I implemented a fully functional UART communication module with real-time data visualization. The design includes: ✔️ Transmitted data represented in hexadecimal (via 7-Segments display). ✔️ Binary data output using on-board LEDs. ✔️ A successful loopback test, verifying accurate TX/RX communication. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of Amos Zaslavsky, whose VHDL course was one of the most impactful experiences of my degree. It gave me a solid foundation in hardware design and introduced me to the challenges and rewards of FPGA development. 💻 Full project code: Available on GitHub (link in the first comment). In your view, what factors are contributing to the scarcity of FPGA engineers? FPGA engineers require a specialised skill, combining hardware, digital logic, and programming languages like Verilog or VHDL, which can be discouragingly complex and challenging to learn. Many engineering degrees may not even offer extensive coursework specifically focused on FPGA design. FPGAs are also significantly more expensive than microcontrollers. ASICs are expensive to produce in small quantities but are also more cost-effective than FPGAs when it comes to mass production.
