❓ What is actually happening behind the scenes of the energy transition? How is it ensured that electricity flows reliably in Germany at all times? The participants of the excursion to TenneT TSO GmbH on 15 November 2024 got to the bottom of these and other exciting questions. 👁️ Interesting insights into system operation ... TenneT is not only responsible for the extra-high-voltage grid from Flensburg to Munich, but also for almost seven gigawatts of offshore wind power that is fed into the control area. This makes the tasks of the system operators particularly demanding: they monitor and control the grid in real time to ensure a stable power supply - despite fluctuations caused by renewable energies such as wind and solar. The grid is monitored around the clock from two control rooms in Dachau and Lehrte, faults are recognised and rectified within a very short time. A highlight of the excursion was the visit to the #ControlRoom, the ‘centrepiece’ of grid operation. This is where the system operators coordinate load flows, intervene in the event of faults and ensure that supply and demand remain in balance. This work requires not only technical knowledge, but also a cool head in critical situations. ... 💡and innovations for the energy transition ... The second part of the excursion focussed on forward-looking projects such as offshore wind farms and the SuedLink high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. The technical challenges involved in the construction and operation of HVDC lines were particularly exciting. Cable samples were used to illustrate how demanding it is to lay the heavy cables, which are several centimetres thick, under the strictest cleanliness requirements. ... 🙏 closing with a heartfelt thank you The excursion offered the participants valuable insights into the work of a #TransmissionSystemOperator and illustrated how complex and multifaceted the tasks of system operators are. A big thank you goes to TenneT TSO GmbH for the informative tour and the opportunity to take a direct look at the challenges of the energy transition. With these impressions, we look forward to further exciting excursions and continued good cooperation with TenneT. Also a big thank you to the VDE Bezirksverein Thüringen for supporting this great event. Credits for photos 3 and 4: TenneT TSO GmbH
