Sometimes we have a hard time changing because things just aren’t that bad right now. Here’s how to make the status quo less comfortable and a few caveats to watch out for.

When untapped talent meets opportunity, magic happens. Last week at Verizon Business’ London Hub, we brought together some of London’s untapped young talent from Unloc’s partner schools and top business leaders for an unforgettable Changemaker Moments event, powered by the support of Juniper Networks But…. this wasn’t your typical networking event. The twist? The young people led from the front and mentored the business leaders. Through reverse mentoring, we flipped the script— proving that fresh perspectives can drive change at every level — whilst enabling young people to learn about the career journey of their business leader mentee. The energy in the room was electric, the insights were profound, and the connections priceless for so many of the young people in the room. This is one way we contribute to creating real social mobility — by bringing untapped talent and opportunity closer together.

What's the most valuable career advice you've received? Glad to have moderated a dynamic panel at a session of the INSOL International Future Leaders of Asia Programme hosted by Drew & Napier! 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝟐𝐀𝐌? This week, me and my amazing teammates Jia Jia He, Raymond T., and Colin Cragin participated in the Mastercard Advisors Case Competition. The entire judging committee were Directors in Mastercards China division, so we worked according to their schedule! We made it to the finalist round (10/100 teams), and some of our competitors were: • A team of MBA students from Peking University • A team of MBA students from London Business School • A team of engineering and data science graduate students from The University of Hong Kong • An absolutely stellar team of undergraduates from the National University of Singapore The learning opportunities from this experience were absolutely incredible, and seeing how other teams operate internationally was doubly amazing. In addition to placing in the finalist round, we were also awarded the best presentation, an immense honor given our competition. Some key takeaways for me were: 𝟏. 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. When your competition includes people who can do real analysis, strategy and key “so-what” recommendations matter the most. 𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. Refine your workflow as much as possible. The top team had such a high-quality level of work one of the judges said it represented a workstream from a real-life consulting engagement and was MBB-level work. 𝟑. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞. If you ever think you’ve finally made it and you’re skilled enough, that’s never the case. There’s always bigger fish and you have to constantly learn and adapt – in my opinion, a great beauty of life. We worked extremely hard, and I’m very proud of what my team was able to accomplish! It’s from them I learned so much, and I won’t ever forget my teammates' faces by the end of the competition. After the adrenaline wore off from presenting at 1AM it was another level of tired!! Opportunities abound in NL Few weeks ago, I was invited to speak to fellow black enterpreneurs about my journey as a business leader in NL. Here are three (3) key insights I shared 1) There are lots of opportunities in NL because there are still many businesses lacking in the province. 2) Duplicating effort is required so that we have diverse options if we want to grow the economy. The way 1 person/group will deliver an idea is different from the way another will deliver the same idea. Therefore, because there is already a college offering project management courses doesn't mean you can't start your own college offering project management courses. Go for it! 3) Idea generation is easy. For example, look at other advanced provinces, are there successful business ideas that can be replicated in NL? If yes, start it. I really enjoying sharing my story and listening to other inspiring stories from fellow black business leaders. What other insight will you add to this? #businessleader #enterpreneurship
