As a social entrepreneur and founder of Let's Create Africa 🌍, I've had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of entrepreneurship 💡 in our communities. However, the journey 🛤️ is not without its challenges. Today, I want to shed light 💡 on these hurdles and share some solutions that can help us navigate this path more effectively. One of the most significant challenges we face is : ° Access to (affordable) capital 💰. Many brilliant ideas 💡 never see the light of day due to lack of funding. Solution: To overcome this, we need to foster a culture of impact investing 💸 and encourage local investors to support social enterprises. ° The lack of mentorship and guidance 🧭. Many social entrepreneurs are charting unknown territories 🗺️ and could benefit from the wisdom of those who have walked the path before. Solution: Establishing mentorship programs and creating platforms for knowledge sharing 📚 can be a game-changer in this regard. ° Lastly, we grapple with policy constraints 📜. In many cases, the regulatory environment is not conducive for social enterprises. Solution: Advocacy for favorable policies and regulations is crucial for the growth and sustainability of social entrepreneurship. Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic 😊. The resilience and creativity of African entrepreneurs are unmatched. We have the potential to drive significant social change and create a better future for our continent. The Global Startup Awards is a competition that aims to recognize and reward outstanding startups, entrepreneurs, and ecosystem players across different regions ¹ ² ³. The competition involves several phases, including public nominations, selection of regional finalists, regional jury and public voting, and selection of global winners ². Here are some key points about the competition: - The competition is held annually and is open to startups, individuals, and ecosystem players from various regions ¹ ². - Public nominations are accepted, and anyone can nominate a startup, individual, or ecosystem player in relevant categories ¹ ². - The competition has several categories, including startup, individual, and ecosystem player categories ². - A jury selects the regional finalists, and the regional winners are selected based on a combination of jury ratings and public votes ². - The global winners are selected through a similar process, with global finalists competing in their respective categories ². Building in public has changed my life. It’s opened up opportunities, connections, and visibility. I believe that the world will continue to move away from the typical "credentials", and more towards building an online portfolio of the work you do. I also believe that building in public is great for transparency, accountability, and knowledge-sharing. During my time in various African countries, I’ve observed a unique arbitrage opportunity: There’s an abundance of untapped potential, but a gap between those who see it and those with the resources to seize it. So now, I’m taking things a step further with "Build in Public Africa" — an incubator funding African entrepreneurs (starting in Uganda 🇺🇬) to publicly build and document both global and local projects, aiming for profitability. Why Africa? 🌍 The lower cost of living means you can achieve far more with much less capital, especially when that capital comes from abroad. I also get to live vicariously through the builders in this incubator because this is exactly what I would do if I were in their shoes. And by documenting publicly, we create a valuable resource so everyone can learn from those building in the trenches. This real-world data will become an invaluable asset as more people join the movement to learn, build, and create profitable ventures! 💡 Entrepreneurship Development | The Most Important Gap to Bridge ... Enough information and training are offered to develop entrepreneurs in Africa, and we do not need more. We need to bridge a specific gap that will awaken and enable the entrepreneurial spirit within the people of Africa and lead to rapid economic upliftment and poverty reduction. "Moving from classroom to the real world" Last year, I assisted with a program (not mine) and mentored four new entrepreneurs. They have all been on an entrepreneurship program covering lean startup (please get it out of Africa) and the normal Silicon Valley stuff, including one-on-one coaching. Yet, after nine months, when I got them, not one of them had a business with a single customer. Recently, I had someone reach out for help. They said they had done three entrepreneurship incubation and training programs, probably at a massive cost, and still, they do not have a business. Had they only bridged the gap between the classroom and the real world, their programs would have delivered impactful results. We need to start having these conversations. Running programs for the sake of running programs is not delivering what we need: people who start businesses that make money (Willy Nsabiyumva this one is for you 😁). At The Human Entrepreneur we take unemployed people in South African townships and get them to start a profitable business, without external funding, in just 5 weeks. What is our secret sauce? We bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. Before you jump to conclusions that I am here to dismantle the African Startup Eco-System, my program is not a threat to others, it is a compliment and can be plugged into new programs, and even those that are running already. We need to work together. Ladies and gents, we have the potential of hundreds of millions of youths; we just have to help them bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.
