Australia's Chief Nurse presenting primary care nursing data which shows a shortfall of 26,000 primary care nurses. When combined with the expected shortfall of 11,000 GPs and continuing absence of allied health from many regions access to community care will be a challenge. Significant investment in primary care to make careers in community settings attractive is required. It makes no sense that doctors and nurses are paid so much less than their hospital counterparts. In addition, these players need to be supported as teams because that way of working will spread both capacity, expertise and joy. Finally, we need acknowledgement of the scope of practice and extension of funded training across these teams. GPs with special interests could be harnessed more effectively. Nurses, pharmacy and allied health working within teams inclusive of GPs can have extended scopes of practice with reduced risks of fragmentation. All of our workforce strategies need to connect to the reform agenda being run across the Department. International Nurses Day, observed on May 12th to coincide with the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, indeed highlights the critical role nurses play in healthcare. Florence Nightingale, often regarded as the founder of modern nursing, initiated profound changes in the healthcare sector, particularly in the areas of sanitation and hospital care. The day serves as an opportunity to appreciate and acknowledge the immense contributions nurses make to society. Despite their vital role, nurses often face significant challenges. Financial constraints are a major issue, as many nurses are underpaid relative to their responsibilities and the critical nature of their work. This is compounded by the high stress and emotional toll of their jobs, which can lead to burnout. Additionally, the profession is frequently undervalued, both in terms of societal recognition and professional development opportunities. Countries within the World Health Organisation (WHO) European Region, and globally, are encouraged to use International Nurses Day not only to celebrate but also to address these issues by advocating for better working conditions, fair compensation, and greater recognition of the nursing profession's importance. One of many issues!!!! “THE Importance Of TIMELY AND APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT OF PATIENT DETERIORATION HAS BECOME increasingly recognised; HOWEVER, there is a SIGNIFICANT DEFICIT IN THE EXISTING LITERATURE REGARDING GRADUATES LEVELS OF PREPARATION for this responsibility.” BASICALLY, THEY ARE NOT BRING TRAINED ACCORDINGLY - a shortage of staff etc.….- it affects their performance etc.….- fail to detect - leads to delay in treatment- leads to more complications and exacerbation of illness, and or misdiagnosis - leads to should be an avoidable disaster ( death is one of them)! ❓❓Are We Losing Our Nurses to Other Industries?❓❓ It seems everyone values the skills, knowledge, and credentials of nurses except healthcare itself. Hospitals might throw some money at nurses to fill spots, but do they truly value what nurses bring to the table? The impact they make on patient care? While hospitals undervalue them, other sectors like coaching, tech, pharmaceuticals, and research are eager to have nurses on board, offering them the respect and acknowledgment they deserve. During the pandemic, it became glaringly obvious how much we just needed "bodies" to fill nursing roles. This devaluation of the nursing profession continues today. Nurses who go above and beyond, who provide exceptional care, are often overlooked because the focus remains on simply filling positions. Healthcare needs to remember: 1️⃣Value and Acknowledge: Recognize and appreciate those nurses who are dedicated, go above and beyond, and significantly contribute to patient care. 2️⃣Retention: Without proper acknowledgment, nurses will leave for industries that recognize and value their contributions. 3️⃣Patient Care: Quality patient care is directly tied to the experience and satisfaction of the nurses providing it. We cannot improve patient care experiences if we fail to value the very individuals who are at the heart of it all. Let's ensure our nurses feel valued and appreciated, so they remain in the healthcare sector where they are most needed.
