Singapore Carbon Market Alliance | Singapore’s latest initiative to increase it's leadership as a regional node for carbon services and trusted carbon markets High-quality carbon credits can support investments in emerging climate technologies and nature-based solutions, and complement the decarbonisation strategies of companies to achieve their climate goals. Singapore is seeing increasing interest from companies in carbon credits to meet their global sustainability goals. Access to carbon credits will be especially important for companies in hard-to-abate sectors where low-carbon technologies need time to be commercially available. The Singapore Carbon Market Alliance (#SCMA) is the first platform in Singapore focused on high-integrity carbon credits that are aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement – and the latest initiative to increase Singapore’s leadership as a regional node for carbon services and trusted carbon markets. Interest in ESG staying strong despite challenging times It's encouraging to see the ASEAN region's commitment to ESG bonds is staying solid despite a global drop - ASEAN's sustainable bond issuance only dropped 1.4% compared to 5.9% last year. There's a fine balance to be struck between economic security and environmental sustainability. It's mostly new territory and is a complex task that will take time to achieve. And that's even if we weren't staring down the barrel of climate change, economic slowdowns, and high fuel prices. But we are. Investors and the finance industry mustn't lose focus. ESG is vital for Singapore's finance industry to enhance its global competitiveness, attract sustainable investments, and keep in line with international standards. If we want to stay a world-class hub of innovation and sustainability, we must keep strengthening our efforts to build economic resilience and address environmental and social challenges. #ESG #EthicalBanking #Sustainability #Singapore

In support of the ASEAN Strategy for Carbon Neutrality, ASEAN-BAC Malaysia is pleased to explore pathways at the national and regional level to address both the supply and demand of high quality carbon credits in the region. An aligned or harmonised regulatory carbon framework could enhance cooperation and economic integration among the ASEAN countries, fostering a collective approach to addressing climate change. Mr. Lim Chern Yuan, Council Member of ASEAN-BAC Malaysia, who is also the Group CEO of Yinson Holdings Berhad chaired an ASEAN-BAC Malaysia closed-door roundtable session in conjuction with the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum 2024 orgnised by Bursa Carbon Exchage (BCX). The meeting was led by Dr Renard Siew, Head of Corporate Sustainability of Yinson, together with Executive Director Jukhee Hong who represented ASEAN-BAC Malaysia and Dr. Wei-nee Chen, Executive VP and Head of Carbon Market, Group Sustainability of Bursa Malaysia, presented on the proposed ASEAN Common Carbon Framework (ACCF). #ASEANBACMalaysia #ASEANClimateStrategy #ACCF #CarbonNeutrality

2nd Malaysia Carbon Market Forum: Key Highlights and Strategic Insights Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the 2nd Malaysia Carbon Market Forum by Bursa Carbon Exchange. The event was buzzing with energy and focus, as Malaysia and ASEAN take big steps towards strengthening the carbon market in the region. Key Announcements: - ASEAN Common Carbon Framework: A unified framework is in the works to standardize carbon market operations across ASEAN, paving the way for better regional collaboration and mutual recognition of methodologies. - Malaysia Carbon Market Association: The launch of this association is a significant move. It will play a crucial role in advocating for a strong and cohesive carbon market while also helping to build the talent needed for these ambitious plans. - Fundraising Platform for Domestic Projects: A new platform was introduced to support domestic carbon projects, ensuring they get the funding needed to grow and contribute to Malaysia’s carbon reduction goals. Forum Insights -Carbon Emissions Strategy: There was a strong focus on the importance of balancing carbon reductions and removals, and rebuilding trust in the carbon market. Leveraging the financial sector to support sustainable investments was also highlighted as a key strategy. -Decarbonization Trends: The discussions emphasized the evolving carbon market, especially the integration of project-based carbon credits into compliance programs and the role of carbon markets in moving capital from the global North to the South. Challenges and Future Directions - Continuous Improvement: There’s a recognition that the carbon market has room to grow. Addressing criticisms and ensuring inclusivity and quality are ongoing priorities. - Rapid Evolution: The carbon market is changing fast, which brings both challenges and opportunities. Setting the right carbon prices will be crucial as we move forward. The forum clearly showed Malaysia’s commitment to leading the regional carbon market and tackling global climate challenges. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: ✔️7% have already achieved carbon neutrality. ✔️37% aim for carbon neutrality by 2050. ✔️18% even more ambitious, targeting 2030. 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: While these ambitions are commendable, businesses face obstacles like customer resistance to higher prices for sustainable products, inadequate government incentives, and limited access to clean energy and waste management solutions.
