Last year, our journey took an exhilarating turn when the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), on behalf of The National Action Committee on AfCFTA, handpicked us among just 8 SMEs to represent Nigeria at the prestigious Intra Africa trade fair in Cairo. In Nigeria, opportunities like this often seem reserved for the well-connected or privileged few. But for us, it was a different story altogether. We didn't rely on special connections or insider information. Our selection was transparent and authentic – a rarity in our world. When the opportunity to participate in the Intra Africa Trade Fair arose, I and a few fellow entrepreneurs leaped at it without hesitation. The selection process was rigorous, with many stumbling along the way for various reasons. But we managed to scale through without issues. As I stood at the airport, minutes before takeoff, the coordinator approached me with a smile. "Usman, so we finally meet in person," he said. His familiarity caught me off guard. How did he know me? He went ahead to reveal that our products, especially our blood pressure tea, had made quite an impression on him and his family. I was happy. Satisfied at the feedback but still curious as to how he knew me. Where we had met. Everybody on the trip was meeting for the first time. It turns out that earlier in the year, when we were asked to introduce ourselves on the LCCI whatsapp group, I didn't pen down a long essay like most did. Instead, I shared a short intro video. Investing in a summary video every year has been a personal commitment. It is a task that we take seriously. We are intentional about the content making sure that it tells our story- talks about our products and our efforts. We try to sell the human side of our business as well. Over time, I have come to realize that it is a powerful tool that allows us to introduce our business to potential partners and investors effortlessly. Little did we know, that simple video would make such a profound impression. He told me that the team had been captivated by the video and discussed it in the office, went out to look for our products and have been patronizing us ever since. The impact of our intro video had played out on selection committee. They felt like they knew us already, thanks to that video. The trade fair itself was a transformative experience, but that's a story for another day. What I want to emphasize is this: as entrepreneurs, it's vital to be intentional about growing and promoting our brand. We must craft a compelling brand narrative that not only explains the how and why of our products but also resonates with the hearts of our audience, leaving an indelible impression. NBC TRADE FAIR IS COMING TO THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF ASABA. Hmmm, I've been getting requests from different people telling me to bring the fair to their state. While this is amazing, it's not easy pulling these feats in any city. The work I and my team put in to ensure we host one successful fair is herculean. But with the Grace of God and our able partners and sponsors, we keep the momentum going. We did it successfully in Kano! It seemed as though Kano wasn't going to be a success. It was as though the north wasn't opened to us. It was as though I shouldn't have planned for Arewa. I wanted to turn my back! I don't like stress. I always tell my team, “see my armpit, there's no hair” But, in the end, I decided to do it afraid. Today, NBC TradeFair Kano is a loud win for us. Guess what? It was our first time in the north. I took a step further and pushed for the ancient city. Did we face barricades and challenges? Yes, we did! But in all, NBC TradeFair was a resounding success. And it was our first time hosting the fair in the city. We had the support and partnership of the state government and other influential dignitaries that came through for us. It was like a dream. But NBC TradeFair Benin was a success. After we did the Benin in March, we took two months break, in April and May to plan the Lagos fair in June. We shook social media with content marketing Our vendors brought in their A Game. The Lagos State government brought in their super powers. Our super sponsors were right behind us. We pushed for the Lagos Tourism/NBC TradeFair. At some point in the preparation, I felt as though I was dreaming. Sometimes I would pinch myself to see if I was still awake, I didn't believe the things my eyes were seeing. That fair was truly eventful. My eyes saw the goodness of the Lord. Even with the rain, my vendors were able to dance the dance of David. Even with the rain, customers were trooping in like no man's business. We experienced everything GOOD at the Lagos fair. This weekend, we are heading to the city of Asaba to do what we know how to do best. And we would be needing your support. As you know, Nelly alone has never been successful without your support. 4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND THE NBC TRADE FAIR ABUJA. 2018 was the first time I picked the courage to host a trade fair for SMEs. See me oh! I had only 50k followers on IG. My Facebook wasn't giving at all. My digital prints weren't as robust as they are now. But seeing the pain my fellow business owners were experiencing, I decided to do it AFRAID. No big sponsor. No big partner. No big funder. My deepest desire was to create a platform where my fellow SMEs will get access to a buying crowd. And the timing wasn't even too right. It was at a time when trade fairs were a “business risk”. Yes you heard me right… Total BUSINESS RISK. SMEs would participate in fairs and end up with little or no results. It was so sad. Very disheartening. Seeing all these quagmires, I still decided to do it anyway. Guess what? We didn't get much buzz. Only had a few registrations. Some of the SMEs that registered for the fair didn’t show up. But something happened that gave me the balls to keep pushing. One of the SMEs that registered for my fair and didn't show up…she went somewhere else to exhibit. Five hours into my fair, a friend of hers called her and said, “big things are happening at Nelly's fair ooh, come quick so you can make sales”. Guess what? Where she went, she didn't make much sales. After getting the gist, she hurriedly rushed down to my fair. In four hours, she made one million. Since then, I have revolutionised the narrative of trade fairs in Nigeria. Yes na me talk am! Go and ask about me! Having read to this point…Here are four good reasons why you should attend our fair this weekend. ● SMEs contribute massively to the Nigerian economy but they get little support. Please come out and support them so they can have more stability to keep doing the good work. ● SMEs employ 87.9% of the labour force in Nigeria, but they still struggle to get funding to grow their business. Please come out and support our amazing SMEs. They are faced with lots of business challenges, these fairs help them to grow their business. ● You deserve to shop more with less. This is an opportunity to shop massively without spending what you spend at malls. My vendors are coming to the show with massive discounts for your sprees. Participating in a trade fair is still a fundamental step for our SMEs looking to enter the Chinese market, especially in the B2B sector. This is because Chinese buyers are unlikely to purchase your products without having seen and touched them, and without having met the producers in person. Moreover, trade fairs are also the best place to meet potential clients and gather valuable market insights. To make the most of your participation in a trade fair in China (and this applies to other markets as well), follow a few simple but important tips: 1. Choose the right trade fair to attend. First, seek information from your national Chamber of Commerce in China, or even better, from people who have already participated. 2. If possible, plan a visit as an attendee before participating as an exhibitor. 3. Clearly define the objectives you want to achieve with your participation and how to measure their success. 4. Organize a promotional campaign in advance to attract the prospects you’re interested in to your stand. 5. Prepare a company presentation in Chinese and business cards in both English and Chinese (on the two sides). 6. Ensure that high-level decision-makers attend the fair, so they can directly handle situations requiring immediate decisions. 7. Plan an information-gathering activity: visit competitors' stands and attend the most interesting events and conferences held during and after the fair. 8.
