What is conflict? "It's like riding down a razor-sharp slide that cuts you on the way down, only to land in a pool of lemon juice at the bottom." I'll never forget this vivid analogy given by a fellow student in a college class years ago when asked to share our thoughts on conflict. It's perhaps the most extreme definition I've ever heard, but at the time, it resonated deeply with me. However, over time, I've shifted my perspective. I've come to realize that giving negative feedback isn't about inflicting pain; rather, it's a catalyst for growth and development. It's a means to help individuals uncover blind spots and reach their full potential. Admittedly, delivering feedback, especially to peers, can be daunting. But avoiding it altogether can lead to what's known as ruinous empathy—a situation where withholding necessary feedback harms both parties in the long run. Yoda's (Star Wars reference for you newbs out there) wisdom rings true: "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate... leads to suffering." When it comes to offering feedback, fear can creep in—fear of how the other person will react, fear of damaging the relationship, or fear of losing respect. But succumbing to this fear only breeds frustration. When feedback remains unspoken, it festers within, hindering progress and growth. As Yoda aptly put it, this cycle inevitably can lead to suffering for both parties involved.
