Have you seen the ESIL article on Science|Business? 👀 ESIL, an EU-funded project, led by Business Angels Europe, META Group, and EuroQuity - Bpifrance, aims to increase the number of angel investors in Eastern Europe. We offer two-day training sessions in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, and Hungary to train around 20 new angel investors per country. This initiative is crucial, as only €395.9 million of the $7.3 billion in European angel investments in 2023 went to Eastern Europe. With more angel investors, start-ups in these regions can grow and innovate better. Despite little change among leading and lagging countries in the latest European Innovation Scoreboard, Cyprus has made a remarkable leap from 15th place in 2017 to 10th in 2024, maintaining its 'strong innovator' status for the third consecutive year. What it takes? - 𝟯𝟵% 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 from 2017 to 2023, outpacing the EU average. - Transformation from a place with no universities into a research hub that is now home to 𝟭𝟮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝟯,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀. - The island is on track to receive €𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 from 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. - 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 supported by a growing network of innovation hubs and venture capital. - Government initiatives such as the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 and a new €𝟮𝟳.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 equity fund to attract international talent and support start-ups. Efforts to boost innovation in Europe’s Widening countries are clearly paying off, with 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 out of 15 nations seeing year-on-year 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀. Traditionally funded by the government and programs like Horizon, Cyprus faces challenges in spin-out policies and IP rights but is clearly on the path to becoming a leading innovation hub. Together with my colleagues at the EAIC - European Association of Innovation Consultants, we have drafted a position on the future of the EIC Accelerator. The detailed analysis of the November 2023 results provides crucial insights and recommendations to shape future EIC Accelerator work programmes. Key highlights: ☑ The success rate for EIC Accelerator interviews dropped to 17% in November 2023, with an overall success rate of 4% for full applications. ☑ A significant 86.8% of funding in the last cut-off of 2023 was allocated to blended financing candidates. ☑ Our recommendations include refocusing on grant-only cases and limiting equity requests to ensure a fairer and more efficient allocation of funds. We believe these changes are essential to support high-potential, less mature companies, crucial for the growth of Europe's deep-tech ecosystem. 👉 Read the full position paper here: https://lnkd.in/eiG3_Z_A #Innovation #EUeic #EICAccelerator #HorizonEurope #DeepTech #Funding #equity European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Xavier Aubry, Emmanuele Angione, Luc Ragon, Alicja Grzegorzek Carrascosa, Susanne Oliver, Michiel Scheffer
