Walmart is famous for selling just about anything you can think of, but shoppers rely on the retail giant more for groceries than for any other category sold in the company's 4,600 US stores. What's more, more shoppers are getting their groceries from Walmart than from any other retailer, and it's not even close. Nearly one in four grocery dollars in the US is spent at Walmart, more than double the share that shoppers spend at Kroger or Costco, according to consumer analytics firm Numerator. That all adds up to more than $264 billion spent on groceries at Walmart US locations in 2023, up from $247 billion and $219 billion in the preceding two years. Before Covid, Walmart could generally beat most groceries on 80-90% of grocery items. However, if you shop at Walmart regularly, you might have noticed that those great prices are not nearly as great anymore. I don't have any hard data, but from my own observations at two of the Walmart stores that I shop at, I strongly suspect that now Walmart is as high or higher than the other major players in at least 60-70% of their grocery and drug items. Moreover, Walmart - at least in Texas, has gotten rid of most of the checkers and installed self-check-out registers, so if you want to get out of the store without waiting in a line at the 2-4 remaining registers where a Walmart employee can check you out, then you're also bagging your groceries, as well. I suspect that Sam and Bud Walton are turning over in their graves.

A lot of people hate Walmart, but they are one if not the biggest employer of Americans directly and indirectly for non-Goverment Agencies. And surprisingly I learned that Amazon is the second largest.

What are they doing right? It’s easy to deride them for their many flaws, but what are the people at Wal-Mart getting right that is leading to these numbers? Anecdotally, I feel like they are reducing the number of options available. For instance, the cookie and soda isles seem to contain half the variety we saw prior to Covid. Are fewer choices more palatable to consumers? No pun intended. Is a reduction of variety accompanied by an increase in quality, taste, or value? Wal-Mart is the Madonna of big box stores. Like the long-reigning queen of pop music, they have survived and thrived far past their shelf-life. Pun intended. The smart leaders noticing, would do well to deeply reflect and seriously ask, “how is Wal-Mart doing that?”

Walmart has a tremendous pull with all vendors; however, inflation is there for all of us.

no need to worry about kroger and albertson merger getting too big to interfere with amazon and walmart, but start with their smaller competitors.... of course, SEC & FTC bullying..

I believe Walmart wins because of putting the customer at the center. Period. From grocery pickup to home delivery, organics to private labels to quality meat. All of this over the past decade adds up. Walmart is not perfect. However, while articles calling for the demise of Walmart by the way of Kmart before they had an answer for eCommerce and Amazon, it's been amazing to see what they solved. And they would be the first to tell you what they haven't. Really remarkable performance.

Personally I think it is the one stop shopping that people enjoy. How about some curtains with your orange juice?
