Preparing for Brake Safety Week 2024: The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will conduct Brake Safety Week from August 25-31, 2024. This annual initiative under the Operation Airbrake program aims to address brake-related safety issues in commercial motor vehicles through comprehensive inspections and educational outreach. Here’s how you can prepare your fleet for this critical event and ensure your vehicles and drivers are ready for inspection. What is Brake Safety Week? Brake Safety Week is an enforcement campaign focused on improving brake safety by inspecting commercial vehicles for brake system violations. It’s part of the CVSA's broader Operation Airbrake program, which includes an unannounced one-day enforcement event each year. Given that brake-related issues are among the most common reasons for vehicles being pulled out of service, this campaign is crucial for maintaining road safety. Last Year’s Results: Out of 18,875 inspections, 87.4% of vehicles had no brake violations, while 12.6% were placed out of service. During an unannounced event, 88.4% of 4,898 vehicles inspected had no issues. Focus Area for 2024: Inspectors will concentrate on the condition of brake linings and pads, checking for contamination, cracks, and general wear. During this year’s inspections, officers will use a detailed checklist to evaluate the following issues: - Brake Linings and Pads: Check for cracks, contamination, and proper installation. - Pushrod Stroke: Measure to ensure it's within allowable limits. - Performance-Based Brake Testers (PBBTs):  Assess braking performance where available. How to Prepare for Brake Safety Week 1. Driver and Maintenance Team Preparation:   - Distribute Checklists: Provide drivers and maintenance personnel with CVSA’s brake inspection checklist and cheat sheet.   - Pre-Inspection: Ensure all brake components, including air brakes, hoses, and drums, are thoroughly inspected. Pay special attention to brake linings and pads, looking for signs of wear, cracks, or contamination.   - Performance-Based Brake Testers: Educate drivers on procedures related to PBBTs if applicable in your area. 2. Preventive Maintenance:   - Regular Checks: Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections to spot any issues early. Ensure all components are securely attached, leak-free, and undamaged.   -Disc Brakes: Inspect the condition of the rotor and check for metal-to-metal contact.   - Brake Chambers: Ensure they are marked correctly and check for proper push rod travel. Being proactive in preparing for Brake Safety Week can help your fleet avoid out-of-service violations and contribute to safer roadways. By focusing on preventative maintenance, driver education, and understanding inspection protocols, you’ll improve your chances of passing inspections and maintaining a strong safety record.
