🍄🌿 From Bush to Supper: The Mushroom Revolution Begins! 🌿🍄
Meet Mr. Rukero, a local farmer who has discovered the incredible benefits of growing mushrooms from encroacher bushes. His experience has been nothing short of transformative.
"The mushrooms grew a lot, and the process was easy," Mr. Rukero shared, highlighting how simple it is to turn bush encroachment into a nutritious solution for the community.
But it doesn’t stop at farming—his wife, Mrs. Rukero, has been experimenting in the kitchen. She cooked the mushrooms with meat one day, and on another, simply fried them with onions. “The whole family loved them!” she said, proving that these mushrooms not only nourish but also bring families together around the table.
🌱 Nutritional Powerhouse: Whether you're looking for an alternative to meat or a way to boost the flavour of your dishes, mushrooms have got you covered!
💰 Income Generation: You can sell your mushrooms in both informal and formal markets, including supermarkets. A fantastic opportunity to boost your income!
🌿 Sustainable Farming: Mushrooms are natural cyclers and recyclers. By cultivating them, you reduce waste and improve soil health—an eco-friendly solution for the environment.
💧 Low Resource Requirements: Mushroom cultivation requires less land, water, and resources compared to traditional crops or livestock, making it ideal for areas facing resource scarcity.
And the best part? MUSHROOMS ARE DELICIOUS! 🍽️
Stay tuned as we continue to explore the many ways encroacher bushes are transforming lives—from feed, to fuel, to food!

Years ago, before embarking on my PhD journey, I pursued an "out-of-the-box" idea. My background in biology and experience working with encroacher bushes led me to dig into the possibility of growing mushrooms from encroacher bush wood. My hunch was not off.
Thanks to Lydia Horn and Meme Esther from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform for believing in my idea and training me in mushroom production, and of course to Nangula Nuumbembe a fellow entrepreneur and mushroom enthusiast, for allowing me to use her backyard for some initial experiments. Those were truly exciting days!
After our success, we introduced this initiative at RUFORUM Network, with Dr Lydia Horn leading the mushroom project component for the University of Namibia.
Now, after witnessing the incredible work of done by our endevour and other projects like MycoHAB and Ndaka Mushrooms, and hearing powerful testimonies of success as the one in the video, it’s clear this message needs to be shared globally.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with the talented food scientist and content creator, Maria Mercy Kapembe, to help spread the word about the immense benefits of producing mushrooms from encroacher bush species.
Stay tuned for our upcoming campaign, detailed guides, and much more! (𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅-𝒕𝒉𝒆-𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒚𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕!📸 )

Reading a history of a pre-modern Europe. Turns out people ate a lot of salted cod. Countries fought wars over the control of Atlantic cod fisheries. Most of the time, the fish was still spoiled when it reached consumers.
Made me grateful for modern food preservation techniques; reminded me of the power of technology as a force to improve human life.
Shout out to the entrepreneurs I know like Manik Suri at GlacierGrid, Benjamin Rubin at SnoFox Sciences and Artyc for your work on the cold chain so that I can continue to eat delicious, practically fresh Pacific salmon instead of rotting salted cod.
And shout out to the many entrepreneurs I know making great food, like Jeni Britton, or exploring alternative foods and production strategies so our palates can continue to evolve as we address climate change like Jesse HorwitzHeartee FoodsAnnie RyuOmeatAli KhademhosseiniNature's Fynd among many others.
If you are a founder building something related to cold chain or supply chain more broadly or agriculture and food, especially at the intersection of climate, reach out! nate@commonwealventures.com

What is “Apidae”?
This is often the first question I’m asked so let me explain… Apidae is the largest family of bees, containing at least 5,700 species. 🐝
Just like people in organizations, bees each have a job and it’s the work of their collective that creates success (and sometimes honey!) THIS is the premise behind Apidae Consulting, LLC …

New innovations in Dutch greenhouse horticulture on display at Greentech.
Many outsiders have little or no knowledge of what innovations are taking place in greenhouse horticulture. This video from Hilverda-Florist, one of the leading breeders in floriculture, shows that robots from ISO Horti Innovators from Gameren can take cuttings with unprecedented speed, precision and consistent quality. With Vision technology and AI, these robots become better and better as they learn. The labor savings are important, but not the main point. Logiqs from Maasdijk has also designed a mobile cultivation system for this company, whereby the cultivation process can be controlled fully automatically. There are actually no more people in the greenhouse. Operating a greenhouse like Hilverda-Florist is actually running a Formula 1 team. Many factors determine success. It starts with the growers, the greenhouse itself, irrigation system, screen and light installation, energy system, mobile cultivation systems, robotization and automation and of course marketing, etc. In this case it is a collaboration between the aforementioned ISO Horti Innovators, Logiqs, Robur and including BvZ. #greentech#horticulture#iso#logiqs#hilverdaflorist#agri#food
