Creative Tip from Steven Spielberg: Align Creativity with Positive Impact In What the Camera Didn’t Capture: Wisdom All Around Us, Volume One – Connect, I share behind-the-scenes stories of my collaboration with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg on a meaningful project: a CD-ROM capturing first-person interviews with Holocaust survivors. Steven’s creative genius goes far beyond the silver screen. From Schindler’s List to founding the Shoah Foundation, he has shown us how creativity can not only captivate millions but also leave a lasting positive impact. “There is power and fulfillment to be found when you align your creative process with making a positive social impact.” Through this project, Steven taught me the importance of using creativity to tell stories that matter—stories that educate, inspire, and ensure history is never forgotten. Whether you’re a filmmaker, writer, or creator of any kind, let this inspire you to align your work with your values and make a difference. Join me for a free online event celebrating creativity, storytelling, and inspiration! Plus, hear more stories about Steven Spielberg and other creatives featured in my book. Save the Date: When: Friday, December 13th Time: 9 AM - 12 PM ET / 6 AM - 9 AM PT Where: Online (DM me for the link!) Let’s explore how we can all channel our creativity into work that changes lives. See you there! #StevenSpielberg #CreativeTip #WisdomAllAroundUs #Creativity #Storytelling #BookLaunch #LiveEvent #Inspiration #SocialImpact #SchindlersList #ShoahFoundation

Q: What does the creative class get wrong about their understood relationship(s) with a (/the) 'corporate entities'? A: What the Creative Class Thinks the Relationship Is : "I give the studio/network/streamer ideas, and they pay me for them..." What the Creative Class misinterprets about the Relationship : The studio/network/streamer has already heard all the great ideas (collectively and corporately, for well over officially 100 years now...and from the most brilliant people in this industry ((i.e. the Oscar Winners)); what they're 'paying you for' is your ability to EXECUTE whatever idea you're coming to them with in a way that fits their corporate and cultural constitution...

🎬 LOVE THIS! Hollywood, we can create impactful stories and be profitable - let's keep going. 💪 George Clooney, Regina King, Michael Keaton and More Call on Hollywood to Make ‘Films With Purpose’ After Participant Closure. “Values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” an open letter organized by the National Domestic Workers Alliance says (excerpt from the open letter) "As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever; to expand the room for debate, to open our hearts to experiences vastly different from our own, to immerse us in the beauty of humanity’s complexities. And in the face of unprecedented change and uncertainty, we need deep partnerships between great storytellers, advocates and movements for change now more than ever, to remind us of our agency in shaping the future and the power of our actions. The future and health of our culture and democracy requires more of us to participate, spread hope, and humanity. Democracy is a living, breathing being that we, as participants, give life." "As we reflect on the accomplishments of Participant, we look forward to championing the next generation of producers that will build upon Participant’s extraordinary body of work, integrating learnings it has offered, seeding new partnerships and innovating within this new media landscape. We call upon Hollywood to meet the moment. There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you..."

Massive thanks to everyone who joined us for an evening of pure creative magic. We delved into the heart of what makes Cult and how we encourage you to be the next host of our event, shared our favourite artists (and weren’t you a lot full of surprises!), and even had a cheeky portrait-taking session. Who knew you were all such talented snappers? We got properly stuck in with discussions on our biggest distractors and debated the age-old question: are you a maker or a manager? And don’t get us started on those time management tools – you’ve given us enough tips to last a lifetime! Fancy being part of our next creative shindig? Give us a follow for all the latest updates or DM if you like to partner with us and be the host for our next creative meet-up @cultstudio_. We’re always on the lookout for fresh faces and brilliant minds to join our creative arsenal. Remember, as we learned today: Rule 1 may be ‘Don’t talk about money,’ but there’s no rule against talking about creativity! So, drop us a comment and let us know your favourite part of the meet-up. Or better yet, share your best (or worst!) portrait from today – we promise not to judge... much! Let’s keep this creative conversation going. After all, CULT is not just a studio – it’s a community of fantastic artists like you! Cult Studio Yolanda Y. Liou Yigit G.

Are You Allowing Your Documentary to Catch Its Breath? As filmmakers, we're used to thinking about where drama and tension might lie - the thrill of the chase, the intensity of confrontation, the jeopardy of a deadline. These pivotal moments develop audience interest and provide obstacles and turning points that build our understanding of characters and shape our narrative. But there’s something important that often gets overlooked... Moments of calm give our audience time to find meaning in what they’ve just witnessed, and connect more thoughtfully with the worlds we're revealing. That's why I encourage my clients to think about 'pacing'. Whether it’s incorporating reflective scenes into early outlines and shoot plans or introducing breathing space into the edit with well-chosen punctuation shots or music, a balance of narrative textures can add vital impact. So remember: Far from slowing your film down, well-timed moments of calm can make all the difference when it comes to emotional depth and connection to a story. __ If you’re looking to create documentaries that keep your audience engaged and leave a lasting impact, let’s chat. DM me a ⭐ to schedule a discovery session today.

This is a reminder to all my fellow hungry filmmakers: your most important task is to work on your craft every day. Whether it's writing, fundraising, refining characters, or scouting locations, this work matters most. Prioritize activities that help you develop your skills, grow as an artist, and move your projects forward. Make it a daily practice to invest in your art and craft—it’s how you truly progress. Talk to you later. #jessthefilmmaker
