Introducing the Martin O'ahu HG-28, a fresh take on a classic design with Hawaiian roots. Joining the Custom K-1 Major Kealakai in the new Martin O'ahu family line of instruments, it’s a tribute to the Hawaiian music craze of the 1920s and early '30s – a pivotal era that helped shape the modern steel-string acoustic guitar. http://spr.ly/6041U3zhN
Recently, I bought a Martin Super D with flamed koa back and sides. I have to say, it is the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. The appearance and tone of this guitar are unmatched. It's a true masterpiece of artistry and craftsmanship. I'm eagerly looking forward to owning its smaller sibling. I can only imagine how wonderful it will be to behold, hold, and play! I ❤️ Martin guitars!
We first introduced the SV-100 SILENT Violin in 1997. Since then, an entire line of SILENT and electric string instruments have become a staple of orchestra classrooms, rehearsal rooms, performance venues and everything in-between.
The SV-100 was a hit among Japanese violinists, but many other string players, while still appreciating the silent feature, opted to plug the instrument into amplifiers to see how loud they could make it. This demand for amplification led to the creation of the first Yamaha electric violin — the EV-204 (as well as a five-string version, the EV-205) — and soon a whole new class of instruments was born.
Although they might seem similar, there are actually quite a few differences between the two types. Today’s versions of these instruments offer advanced technology to allow musicians to choose the best stringed instrument for their playing needs.
Which one would you choose?

Do minor keys always express sadness? Not at all. In music, as in life itself, there are countless shades of emotion. In the baroque period, there is a particularly wide variety of moods expressed within the minor. There can even be a kind of energetic joy: the violin and keyboard concerti immediately come to mind.
In this Prelude and Fugue in A minor, we have drama, excitement, struggle, and a strong sense of resolve and determination. The prelude's disjunct movements, insistent rhythms and repeated notes create a powerful inner energy.
The character of the fugue subject, viewed in the context of the fugue's exceptional length, produce a feeling of undaunted determination to overcome. The contrapuntal treatment is comprehensive, and all devices serve a dramatic end. The monumental conclusion, in the major, contains an extended tonic pedal point which is tied over four and a half bars. I use the middle ‘sostenuto’ pedal and repeat the tied notes to prolong these notes as much as possible. The final bars are all-conquering!
Did you know... that a single violin is made with over 70 individual pieces of wood?
Each component, is carefully crafted and assembled by skilled luthiers to create the instrument. This intricate process highlights the artistry and precision behind every note a violin produces; it builds the unique sound and character of each instrument.
The next time you hear a violin, remember the craftsmanship and tradition that goes into creating the instrument, that with skilled hands produces beautiful music.
The Classical period was crucial in the development of the piano because it became the dominant keyboard instrument due to its ability to vary dynamics through touch. Understanding the specifics of a style period is invaluable for learning, interpreting and performing its music. In this blog post we look at a few key features of the Classical period, namely Sonata form and two ways in which composers enrich harmony.

15 years ago I released 'Contemporary Traditional Irish Guitar'.
This is my most popular album. I sold out of CDs of it that I brought on tours of Japan and Germany a few years ago. Tracks from it are also my most streamed tracks and it has gotten more radio-play than any other album of mine.
Despite this, the album has not really been given much credit in Irish trad circles. I'm not generally considered when people talk about Irish trad music on guitar and I'm rarely invited to play this kind of music at Irish festivals or venues. I'm definitely more appreciated outside of Ireland for this Irish guitar style.
This is probably because there's a general opinion in Irish trad circles that guitarists playing Irish trad are better to stick to accompaniment and not try to be soloists.
Well, I don't agree with that, and present this album as evidence that not only can a guitarist play the tunes with all the right ornamentation and rhythms etc, but, with a bit of work and creativity, we can also do it at the same time as accompanying ourselves with bass notes, chords and other harmonies.
With that, guitar can be the closest instrument to Ireland's national instrument, the Celtic harp, whilst also having elements of fiddle playing and piping in ornamentation. I do this by utilising tunings not commonly used in Celtic music - the main one being DGDGAE, which I call 'Fiddle tuning'.
Another issue more conservative trad fans may have with this album, is that all the tunes were composed in the past 50-60 years or so, hence the title.
There's 20 tunes by Paddy Fahey on it, as well as tunes by Liz Carroll, Charlie Lennon, Ed Reavy, Larry Redican and Tommy Peoples.
Yet, all these musicians are now considered Irish music legends, so their compositions are as 'traditional' now as any older tunes. So, it really is a traditional Irish music album, nothing else.
So, with this, I not-so-humbly present my case to be given a bit more credit for developing new directions in Irish trad guitar, 15 years ago!
Have a listen for free on Bandcamp and if you like it, please share it around.
Thanks also to my talented sister Fran Flynn, who designed the gorgeous album cover.
