Helsing, the leading European AI defence company, announced the establishment of Helsing Estonia OÜ to enhance its operations and engagements within the Baltic region. This strategic expansion follows Helsing's commitment to deterrence and defence along NATO’s Eastern Flank. Moreover, in a pledge to ensure the Baltic defence industrial base is equipped with state-of-the-art AI-capabilities, Helsing is committing 70 million Euros of investment into the Baltic defence industry over the next three years. “The strengthening of European and NATO borders is a time-critical requirement for the safety of our democracies. To this end, we are establishing Helsing Estonia to bring advanced AI capabilities to the Defence Forces of the Baltic countries. 🤔 Do Lithuanian research institutions have the potential to cultivate defence technologies? Our project managers, Dominykas Kugelevičius and Lukas Charitonovas, firmly believe so. We can already take pride in successful collaboration between the military ✈️ and academia 🔭 in domains such as laser communication between ships and loitering munition. Such endeavours not only fortify the defence forces but also foster the advancement of science and innovation within the country. 🚀 During their project at the Defence Resources Agency, Dominykas and Lukas meticulously analysed Lithuania's capacity to innovate military technologies. They contend that, due to the unfavourable geopolitical situation ⚔️, the country's armed forces are swiftly bolstering their combat capabilities through procurement of already-made products. Due to the long duration of research, experimental development ranks among the long-term priorities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Even though Europeans have significantly increased their defence spending over the past two years, there is still a massive transatlantic imbalance in NATO. The potential re-election of Donald Trump puts NATO’s future into question. Trump has controversially stated that he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to any NATO country that doesn’t meet the 2% defense spending target.   Conversely, if President Biden is re-elected, NATO may still struggle as the administration juggles European defense commitments with the rising threat from China.   This webinar will explore these scenarios, discussing NATO’s adaptability and the broader implications for international security. 

With the newly elected US administration set to shake up defense spending, European defence tech must stay resilient and, most importantly, independent. Nordic Air Defence CEO, Karl Rosander, went on record with Forbes to discuss the need for changing priorities in defence tech spending and innovation. “With Trump, the only thing predictable is his unpredictability. Some of us had the opportunity and honor to contribute (for decades) to one of the most successful multinational programs in NATO for decades - the Airborne Early Warning and Control Force. In this picture, you will surely find around 15 nationalities but certainly a single Force and Mission - making the bird behind us fly/operate. In times when Nations are assaulted by doubts regarding what can be jointly achieved, this picture might remind us of the value of international collaboration. NATO provides a crucial platform for its member nations to come together and deliberate on vital issues concerning the ever-evolving space domain. By fostering open dialogue, Member States can collaboratively address common challenges and strategize on collective responses. This level of cooperation strengthens the alliance and ensures that space-related policies and initiatives are aligned with mutual interests and security objectives. 🌌 I’m pleased to see the NATO Bi-Strategic Command Space Working Group achieving greater success with each iteration! This group, comprising experts and representatives from various member nations and NATO entities, has been instrumental in advancing NATO's space capabilities and strategies. Their ongoing success underscores the importance of sustained cooperation and highlights the tangible benefits of collective efforts in addressing space-related challenges. 🚀👏 As the space domain becomes increasingly congested and contested, it is essential for nations to work together efficiently. Collaborative efforts allow to enhance situational awareness, share technical expertise, and promote the development of standardized protocols.
