Thanks Tatum Hunter, Nitasha Tiku and the The Washington Post for talking with me about this important topic. The avalanche of startups claiming to be doing #deepfake detection and/or multimedia #forensics is as worrying as deepfakes themselves. Most of these startups are built around people with no to minimal artificial intelligence (#AI) training and no formal digital forensics training. These companies will exacerbate the problem simply because they will increase the uncertainty about what is real and what is fake. Building "products" that are not properly and thoroughly evaluated will further muddy the waters, and lead to public mistrust in automated algorithms.   Using "accuracy" as a metric to claim success highlights the lack of AI and forensics training, because "accuracy" is the weakest way of evaluating algorithms. These algorithms must be evaluated in terms of false alarm rates, false negative rates, class imbalance, out of distribution generalization, harmonic mean, etc. A few years ago I developed a predictive voice analytics algorithm for a Maryland startup that was later acquired by a publicly traded company in the Australian Securities Exchange. As part of their due diligence, they conducted extensive review of the software, algorithm, evaluations, etc. They did not just take "trust me, it works". https://lnkd.in/ePsUTKiW
