How can AI agents revolutionize military decision-making? Fellows Richard Farnell and Kira Coffey write that the United States Department of Defense should aggressively begin experimenting with Agentic AI tools, a category of AI that can work through a series of tasks on its own to achieve an assigned, complex objectives) in its Joint Operational Planning Process (JOPP).

🔽 See DoD's input request below 🔽 Time for some of those great ideas batted around on LinkedIn to reach the right people in DoD, particularly how to reach small businesses and non-traditional defense contractors and bring them into the fold early in the design, development, and testing processes. The DoD needs DIB expansion. AI, like it or not, is the next big initiative for DoD and most Federal agencies. DoD needs help to make it happen and leveraging AI is going to be an avenue to get it done.
Public Input Sought on AI in Defense Applications The DoD Office of Industrial Base Resilience seeks public comment on actions it can take to enable the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) to continue to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) for defense applications. Of special importance to small businesses is the feedback sought on question #4: “How can the DoD support the involvement of non-traditional defense contractors and small businesses in the design, development, testing, and deployment of AI technologies for defense applications?” Feedback from the public will guide the DoD in developing policies, initiatives, and resource distribution to ensure support for the DIB in integrating AI into defense systems. Public comments will also be used to formulate a Trusted AI Defense Industrial Base Roadmap. Public comments will be accepted until July 22, 2024. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/g9YRwShg

Thanks Tatum Hunter, Nitasha Tiku and the The Washington Post for talking with me about this important topic. The avalanche of startups claiming to be doing #deepfake detection and/or multimedia #forensics is as worrying as deepfakes themselves. Most of these startups are built around people with no to minimal artificial intelligence (#AI) training and no formal digital forensics training. These companies will exacerbate the problem simply because they will increase the uncertainty about what is real and what is fake. Building "products" that are not properly and thoroughly evaluated will further muddy the waters, and lead to public mistrust in automated algorithms. Using "accuracy" as a metric to claim success highlights the lack of AI and forensics training, because "accuracy" is the weakest way of evaluating algorithms. These algorithms must be evaluated in terms of false alarm rates, false negative rates, class imbalance, out of distribution generalization, harmonic mean, etc. A few years ago I developed a predictive voice analytics algorithm for a Maryland startup that was later acquired by a publicly traded company in the Australian Securities Exchange. As part of their due diligence, they conducted extensive review of the software, algorithm, evaluations, etc. They did not just take "trust me, it works". https://lnkd.in/ePsUTKiW
Fooled by AI? These firms sell deepfake detection that’s ‘REAL 100%.’
