Meanwhile, it's very much a part of human nature to seek similarities among phenomena rather than focusing on differences, laying the groundwork for change. Sometimes, this inclination is justified, especially when attempting such comparisons seems unimaginable. Take, for instance, the question: What similarities exist between Opera and Jazz? Instead of assuming there are none, consider how George #Gershwin made an attempt to reconcile these two genres with his creation, "Porgy and Bess."
What makes "Porgy and Bess" somewhat similar to #jazz is its incorporation of jazz elements into the operatic form. Gershwin infused the score with blues, jazz, and spiritual influences, creating a uniquely American sound. The opera features syncopated rhythms, improvisational passages, and harmonic progressions reminiscent of jazz music. Additionally, the characters often sing in a conversational, idiomatic style that reflects the vernacular language of the time.
While "Porgy and Bess" is not a traditional jazz work, its fusion of operatic and jazz elements makes it a notable example of how these two genres can intersect and influence each other.

This is really about our refusal to create an educated electorate. Chatting with folks in their 20s, some literally do not understand how the system works, they know they don't understand it, they see the fruits of what we've created in this very inequitable system, and they're divested. So who ends up voting? A lot of really scared, self-serving as opposed to community-driven, cynical, anti-forward thinking individuals. Who will be long dead when the country has slipped into its final morass of failed late-stage capitalism. We need to work on getting Americans aware about the voting process. Yes to more voter education -- it's a crisis now.

The heartbreaking and devastating cuts to Florida's arts communities need to be addressed at the ballot box, in the board rooms of art institutions, in the media, at community forums, with letters, calls, emails and action. This outrageous view is compounded by diminishing self expression, freedom of speech and freedom to create. Our state representatives should be ashamed of their lack of backbone and unwillingness to veto action taken by one person. How will we rise up together to stop this insanity?

Being with the right people, at the right place is the game changer!
In a social experiment conducted by Washington Post.. Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, dressed in casual clothes, stood near a wall at DC railway station for 45 mins. Few Passer-bys stopped there for few mins, few spared him a dollar and few gave few quarters. In total Joshua collect about $30+ in about 45 mins.
Just days before this experiment, Joshua had performed at Boston’s Symphony Hall, where even the cheapest seats were over $100 and all seats were sold out.
The Joshua Bell experiment shows that context and the right audience are crucial for recognition.
It makes us rethink how we see value and talent in everyday life and highlights the importance of showcasing skills in the right setting.
Whether in arts, business, profession, or personal life, being with the right people and place is key to getting recognition.

If you saw the story on ArtsJournal about Milwaukee arts organizations being in trouble, let me provide some important context as journalists are missing the real point.
The WI Policy Forum reported out on 2022 data regarding earned revenue. Of course it was way down. That was the first season after organizations had reopened from the pandemic closures and at least for Milwaukee Rep, we canceled more than 60 performances that year due to Covid. In FY24, Milwaukee Rep was back to normal earned to contributed ratios for us -- 60% of our budget coming from earned revenue.
HERE'S THE REAL POINT -- we are much more reliant on PRIVATE philanthropy, because there is virtually no public/government support of the arts in Milwaukee. Why is WI the worst in the country for public arts funding? Why is Milwaukee the worst major city and county in the country for public arts funding?

Matt-Q: Music,Humanities and Language Educator, Vocalist, Songwriter, Executive Film Producer, Vocal Pedagogy Specialist and Special Educational Needs (SEN) Champion
"UNBROKEN- NATIONAL ANTHEM" BY MATT-Q
https://lnkd.in/g9qYVHnh
One major reason why I embarked on the path of music, using it to promote awareness for Special Educational Needs (SEN) is due to choir teachers who encouraged me to inculcate what I have been given.
In a situation where a few guys were rostered to sing the National Anthem acapella in the morning during flag raising (yeah, that was the practice in the school), I ended up doing most of the duty. I became known as Mr "MAJULAH SINGAPURA", but this gave me my baptism of fire.
For a guy with SEN which were undiagnosed then and used to being called stupid, my maiden attempts singing for the school community were INTIMIDATING. I was shaking like a leaf, but because those choir teachers never gave up on me, even when my voice cracked in the morning due to lack of warming up or sickness, I was inspired to pursue this path of PASSION.
Some implied recently, that I have PASSION, but meant rather obviously that there was little substance.
PASSION, without discipline, focus and learning through repeated failures means misdirected energy and inconsistency. That is true for Neuro-typical individuals already. It is unlikely, that persons of experience in a particular career or skill for so many years, would have just lasted so long just because of PASSION, which is not even rational.
Those with SEN who had to work TWICE AS HARD and had to devise innovative ways to survive can tell you a thing or two about FOCUSED METHODOLOGY and HONING a RIGOUR OF DISCIPLINE that involved much failing, but in the end, were proven to be credible, reliable and effective.
It is because guys like us struggle with grasping what others may consider BASIC that we learned how TO BREAK THINGS down and REASSEMBLE them by capturing the MAIN IDEA and ESSENCE of a concept or principle. It is because we struggle with divergent thoughts that we've disciplined ourselves to form STRUCTURED FRAMEWORKS that form the BACKBONE of comprehension, evaluation and comparison. And because we did not get all these easily, we learned how to simplify and teach them.
Could it be possible that such individuals who have braved the merciless neurotypical world where there was little awareness nor understanding for neurodiversity, have gotten by and helped so many other appreciative students for so many years just based ON PASSION ALONE?
To benefit, one must be willing to work for it because there are no short cuts. To those who are adverse to it, naturally, the rigour will give them 'low morale' because results do not seem immediate. We then take it out on those who are trying to really help us and have seen how the UNLOCKING of that paradigm would change lives.
