The start of Banned Books Week in the US is today going from Sept. 22 to 28. I thought I'd share an awesome map made by Little Free Library, PEN America, and the American Library Association, which shows areas hit hardest by book bans. As a born and raised Texan, it's disheartening to see that, as of Fall 2022, my state led the nation with 438 book bans—22.69% more than Florida, the second-highest, with 357 (PEN America, 2023). Many of these bans target books that explore critical themes like race, history, sexual orientation, and gender. This kind of censorship is undemocratic and a direct threat to free expression, aiming to restrict access to diverse stories and perspectives. This week, I encourage everyone to explore the map, find a Little Free Library near you, and consider purchasing a banned book to place inside. Together, we can foster inclusivity, support free access to information, and ensure that these important stories continue to reach readers. https://lnkd.in/ejcUXaM8?

It's Banned Books Week from September 22 to 28! 📚✨ At The Library Corporation, we passionately support the freedom to read, recognizing that access to diverse literature is vital for a thriving democracy. This week serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing challenges to our right to read freely. We stand firm against censorship and advocate for every individual's right to choose what they read. Here’s how you can show your support: - Educate Yourself: Learn about the importance of intellectual freedom and the impact of book bans. - Engage: Join discussions or book clubs focused on banned literature. - Advocate: Use your voice on social media and local hearings to promote the freedom to read and raise awareness about censorship. Together, let’s ensure that every story can be told and every voice can be heard. I have edited many amazing books in my career, including "We Shall Not Be Denied: A Timeline of Voting Rights and Suppression in America." This book, written by Cicely Lewis and Cayla Bellanger DeGroat, has received a starred review by Booklist. Check out the review!

As a lifelong reader, library user, and professional degreed librarian, I know how books can not only entertain and educate, but can also serve as a safe space where a person can find understanding, can see other people like them, and learn that they are not alone. Books can help readers find a way to start very hard conversations and gain clarity about questions that seemingly have no answers. Books are lifelines for so many students and adults. Won't you join me? #freedomtoread

Free people read freely. It’s that simple. But when books vanish and ideas are silenced, we have to ask: Who gets to decide? That’s why we resist—not to rebel, but to defend the freedom to think. Libraries are more than books—they’re lifelines. When they’re threatened, so is progress. Protect them. Read banned books. Defend open access. Stand for truth and let it breathe. This is why I’m proud to support Molly White and her fight against censorship. Free people don’t wait for permission to think. They protect the light of knowledge—for everyone. Share this. Keep the lights on. Defend open access to information. https://lnkd.in/gB7NYTt4

Being on Maine Calling to discuss book censorship with colleagues dedicated to intellectual freedom was an honor and a privilege. "Debate over whether certain books should be restricted or banned is brewing nationwide-- and communities in Maine are clashing over this issue as well. We'll discuss the controversial subject, why some are raising objections, and how libraries and school boards are grappling with calls for book banning." https://lnkd.in/gjjP3ArJ Questions about what is happening in school and public libraries? I am happy to chat about it. Feel free to DM me - I know many parents have concerns - we all need to talk more. *Reading is a foundational skill, critical to future learning and to exercising our democratic freedoms. *Books are tools for understanding complex issues. Limiting young people's access to books does not protect them from life's complex and challenging issues. *Removing and banning books from public libraries is a slippery slope to government censorship and the erosion of our country's commitment to freedom of expression. *Visit UniteAgainstBookBans.org to join the fight against censorship.

It’s #BannedBooksWeek! Book bans are not new, but they have become more frequent, systematic, and directed at marginalized communities. Banning books is just one form of censorship. Learn more about how censorship attempts can show up in your communities: https://lnkd.in/emJtAMyg

Have you visited a Little Free(dom) Library yet? Everyone has the right to read — and there’s never been a better time to support books that may be banned or challenged unfairly. Little Free(dom) Library locations all over Philadelphia help put these books in the hands that need them, with a special spotlight on banned books by Black authors and other minority voices. Even if you’re not able to make a visit, consider seeking out books like these and supporting library efforts to keep them accessible. Expanding your worldview and engaging with someone else’s story can be as simple as picking up a book (and spreading the word about the ones you love). #VisitPhiladelphia #PhiladelphiaReads #LittleFreedomLibrary #Libraries #BooksAndReading #BannedBooks

Here it is. My copy of the Placing Disability anthology with my essay "A Sense of Place & Cyberspace: The Hybrid Way I Live, Work, & Play." I talk a lot about the benefits of technology, and I stand by every word. But there's still something to be said for the experience of holding a physical book.

In the video clip, the correct organization is Pen America. Excellent organization on the frontlines on the literary freedom battle. Their research is quite eye-opening. https://lnkd.in/gum4RvJy
