What does Japanese knotweed root look like? 🌱 👀 When broken or cut, the inside of the root looks quite carrot-like and I think smells like fresh wood chipping others think it smells sweet. The roots tend to break easily as you can see in the video and will likely spread across a network of rhizomes which may link up with other stands in the area. Plants which often get mistaken for knotweed such as dock tend to have single tap roots (like carrots) rather than an extensive network of rhizome. Using the roots for identification is an excellent way to confirm if you have knotweed, especially in the winter if there’s no above ground growth. Always be careful to prevent the spread of knotweed if you’re investigating the below ground part of the plant. A piece the size of a small fingernail could facilitate the spread and allow the knotweed to escape the site.
