In collaboration with other Kansas colleges, Newman's Educate the State program aims to make teacher education more affordable and accessible — particularly in education deserts. The program allows students to complete an associate’s degree at Butler or Cowley, then transfer to Newman, Friends or Southwestern to pursue a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. “We are desperate for teachers. … This opportunity expands the availability for our graduates to become teachers who believe in their faith, live their faith, love their faith," superintendent for Catholic Schools in Wichita Janet Eaton said. I appreciate this piece elevating the multi-faceted work that #CommunitySchools do and the multiple sources of support that keep them going. Specifically, I appreciate this description of what community schools do—"a community school engages the entire school and its community in providing students the targeted support and resources they need to succeed in the classroom: from helping families navigate access to health care, mental health services, food, and the internet, to providing workforce training, literacy development, tutoring, and safe after-school programming." And, I appreciate how this piece highlights the interplay of nonprofit, federal, and state funding that has helped more students benefit from this evidence-based approach to education—including the federal Full-Service Community Schools grants.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to help spread the word about the good work happening in New Mexico's community schools. Read more in my guest column in today's Albuquerque Journal: https://lnkd.in/eq-ZEzev

Impact and progress matter. In this post from Robert Rogers he shares a recent blog from Brent Beasley about the state of our performance in Fort Worth Tarrant County schools. Our students are our future and thier progress or lack of progress does impact all of us. Here is a quick quote from his article. I encourage all of us to read it and think about actions we can take to make improvements. “Why does this matter? A recent study by the State of Texas followed 3rd graders who scored below grade level on the state assessment. As they followed those 3rd graders over the next 15 years, they found that less than 2% went on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree after high school. In other words, over 98% of 3rd graders who were below grade level did not earn a college degree of any kind. “How our kids are doing in school now matters immensely for what they will be able to do in their future. Our children who can’t read or do math at grade level are stuck behind a forbidding fence that runs between them and future opportunity.” #impsci #implementation #implementationscience #changemaker

Lynwood Superintendent Gudiel Crosthwaite calls on our state leadership to fundamentally change how school facilities are funded so that all students have access to the facilities they need and deserve to focus on their education. Learn more: 👇 California students urgently need school facility funding from the state to modernize outdated and unsafe facilities. We must pass an education bond this year because there are billions of dollars in unmet needs. In moving forward with a much-needed education bond, however, it is crucial that our state legislature and the Newsom administration first fix the inequitable and unconstitutional system of school facility financing in California. Currently, low-wealth districts receive substantially less state facility funding per student compared to their higher wealth counterparts—even though they have greater modernization needs from compounded disinvestment from the state, and less ability to raise local funds. Through this system, wealthy school districts can build theaters and STEM labs and pools. But low-wealth neighborhoods, who have been historically ignored and underinvested in—who need more funds to meet the needs of their students—are stuck using what funds they have to repair HVAC systems and maintain the conditions of their existing buildings. The result is an unequal and unconstitutional system in which students in low-wealth districts receive an education inferior to that of their peers in higher-wealth districts. Join Public Advocates and impacted students, families, educators, and grassroots community organizations across the state who are urging for an equitable education bond by signing onto our petition: https://lnkd.in/gHnezfTr

Attention California parents! Did you know that up to $1,500 is available to low income, foster, and/or homeless kids in grades K-12 attending public schools in the state? That's right! This money can be used towards college savings and is waiting for up to 3.6 million eligible kids. However, only 350,000 parents have claimed their kids' accounts so far. Don't let this opportunity slip away! For many families in marginalized communities, this sum of money is a fortune, and it could be the jump start that kids need to become happier and wealthier adults. Studies show that college graduates make an average of $1,000,000 more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. Moreover, owning a college fund with at least $500 makes a child 3x more likely to attend college and 4x less likely to drop out. So, if you know anyone who is from a low-income household with grade school kids, please encourage them to sign up at www.calkids.org. Remember, sometimes all a kid needs is a little lift.
Join us in celebrating this amazing CalKIDS milestone—350K accounts claimed and counting! 🎉 Now it’s your turn. Keep the momentum going by claiming your eligible child's free funded CalKIDS college savings account. They could receive up to $1,500 for college or career training. The time is now. A wise man once said, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all". This principle lies at the core of our mission, which is why Be THE Voice weaves service opportunities throughout all three tiers of our program. Research from the University of Minnesota Youth Development Study shows that volunteering is linked to higher grade point averages and greater academic confidence. Service learning goes even further, not only boosting academic performance but also sharpening critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world situations. By partnering with passionate educators and school administrators, we can provide students with an education that nurtures both the heart and the mind—empowering them with the tools for lifelong success. “In terms of social equity, unemployed job seekers without a driver’s license are in a disadvantage in reaching sufficient job opportunities, an effect that is enhanced by the dispersed land-use patterns.” (Case study on transportation shared in comments) I can’t say enough positive words about the work of Baltimore City Public Schools in helping students access a driver’s license. This is just one of many examples of the district working to ensure graduates are career ready. While a driver’s license doesn’t readily come to mind when workforce and education professionals talk about industry-recognized credentials, it arguably the most commonly listed job requirements regardless of industry.
