Global critical minerals demand for clean energy tech is set to at least double by 2040. This represents a generational opportunity for Canada, as we possess many of the minerals needed to help meet that demand. Canada’s 🇨🇦 #CriticalMinerals Strategy Annual Report for 2024. This is important for galvanizing the country’s focus toward delivering the strategic supply that huge #mining industry and reserves position us for. The report, which is from an in-Canada for-Canada perspective, includes interesting graphics, including future battery related demand. The bottom line is that the potential to increase value and development through a strategic critical minerals focus is clear. Two things that the strategy doesn’t get into: 1. Flexible business model designs that can target smaller projects and community-ownership schemes where appropriate - this is a largely unfulfilled opportunity area where strategic thinking could help 2. The international presence of our huge mining industry - given an in-Canada focus, this isn’t core scope of the document, but it is value for the industry - with projects across all parts of 🌍, Canadian mining companies share land with artisanal miners in countless places. Support and collaboration can flip conflict risk toward collaborative productivity - value for Canadian companies, increased dignity and productivity of work for artisanal miners, enhanced development and biodiversity protections in areas that neighbor projects, and strengthened reputation for Canada’s industry as a driver of development and collaboration. #Canada is an (almost) perfect match for the EU's #criticalminerals needs according to Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP). In a publication earlier this month, the German Institute for International & Security Affairs (SWP) called Canada a "'perfect match' - a resource-rich and reliable partner that shares the EU's #geopolitical interests and #sustainability goals." SWP even called for greater European investment in Canada's #mining sector: "the EU should offer stronger financial incentives for the integration of European and Canadian industries, promote scientific exchange and technical collaboration, and advocate for robust corporate due diligence in supply chains." As the world moves towards what the report calls "less China, more security," Canada more than ever needs investment capital urgently to convert its #energysecurity promise into #energytransformation prosperity. "Canada needs what Chinese investors have been readily providing: capital, and quickly, because the race to acquire resources is already in full swing and the window of opportunity for Canada to establish itself as a leader in this field will not be open indefinitely," the report concludes. However, the continent has yet to fully seize the opportunities presented by its natural resource endowments. Estimates show that African countries generate only about 40% of the revenue they could potentially collect from these resources. Amid current global crises, limited fiscal space, slow growth and high debt, African countries need to maximize the financial and development benefits of these resources, especially critical energy transition minerals, says UNCTAD.

Revival of the Critical Minerals Mega-Railway in Africa   Introduction The United States, in collaboration with the European Union, is undertaking a significant initiative to revive a mega-railway project through Africa. This project, known as the Lobito Corridor, is a strategic move to secure a stable supply of critical minerals essential for the green energy revolution².   Background The Lobito Corridor is a 1,200-mile-long railway that aims to connect the mineral-rich regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia to the Angolan coast⁵. The railway's expansion is expected to increase freight traffic sixfold by 2035, providing a more efficient route for Congolese copper and cobalt, crucial for modern technologies².   Investment and Collaboration The US International Development Finance Corporation has pledged $250 million in financing, marking its first rail investment in Africa².
