Day two of the #COABE conference. A very impressive and convincing session was called: "Breaking the GED-fever: When NY State Trusted Teachers during the COVID-pandemic.” Most adult education is focused on the standardized GED tests on which students pass or fail. Many learners fear and hate these tests. But there is sometimes room for alternative pathways, which came to blossom during the pandemic. The City University of New York created such pathways that relied on teacher and program attestations and did research on learners results and experiences: in the classrooms more focus on the learning process than on the testing, more well-being, more joy, ánd better results compared with other groups. #numeracy

Preparing for the ISEB Pre-Tests? In the Autumn issue of Education Choices Magazine, we answer frequently asked questions to help guide your preparation. Read the full article at pages 50-51: https://lnkd.in/eVg7Hhqy.
Preparing for Entrance Exams Advice for parents about ISEB Pre-Tests 💫💫💫 What are the ISEB Pre-Tests and does my child need to take them? The ISEB Pre-Tests are a set of online, adaptive, multi-choice tests used by many senior schools as part of their admissions process. The tests assess children’s skills in mathematics and English, as well as their problem-solving potential through verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests. Senior schools will advise you if your child is required to take the Pre-Tests, but if in doubt, you can always contact ISEB through our support portal. For more information and advice on ISEB Pre-tests, turn to page 50 of the Autumn edition.🍁🍂🍁 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVg7Hhqy #educationchoicesmagazine #educationcornerpodcast #educationmatters #study #learn #think #schoolsadvice #independentschools #entrancexam #parentadvice #EDIB #DEI #equality #diversity #inclusion #belonging #exams #ISEBPreTest #ISEB ISEB | Independent Schools Examinations Board

Yes to this. These assistive technology tools are literally lifesavers for some students. Why we have persisted so long in not allowing students who need them to access them is beyond me but…this news from JCQ is huge. We need to shout this from the rooftops because it will be hidden from plain sight for most exams officers, parents, schools. Tech is only a tool but as Patrick McGrath reminds me regularly: useful for all, necessary for some. There’s no paid partnership or ad going on here either. I genuinely know that Read&Write needs to be in every educational institution. #IDEAS #innovation #education #digital

Major news for our EAL students! For years, Read&Write has been a lifeline for thousands of SEN students, offering them the independence and control they need during exams through access to a reader and scribe. Today, I learned about a major shift in Access Arrangements with the publication of the latest JCQ Access Arrangements Handbook —any EAL (English as an Additional Language) student who benefits from hearing text read aloud can now have a computer reader in exams this year. This change couldn’t come at a better time. In every school and college I visit, I hear about the increasing pressures on teachers as they strive to meet the diverse needs of their growing EAL populations. The challenges are real, and so is the stress. But there’s hope. With this update, teachers can now rely on our tools like Read&Write to support EAL students not just in exams, but every day in the classroom as their normal way of working. Our technology makes text accessible, enabling students to engage with content, understand it deeply, and perform to the best of their abilities—whether they’re studying or sitting an exam. This is about more than just ticking a box for exam readiness; it’s about making a real difference in the day-to-day lives of teachers and students alike. Let’s continue to support every learner, and ease the burden on teachers by giving them the tools they need to help every student succeed. There are three more sessions
The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is a standardised assessment used in South Africa to measure the academic readiness of students for university-level education It checks skills in three areas: reading and understanding (Academic Literacy), using numbers and solving problems (Quantitative Literacy), and math (Mathematics). Universities use the scores to help decide who to accept and to find out which students might need extra help. Many students and parents don't realise how important the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are for university admission and academic success. To help students prepare, I am hosting preparation workshops on the dates listed in the graphic. These workshops will give students the skills and confidence they need to excel in the NBTs, increasing their chances of university acceptance and scholarship opportunities. Please kindly share this post to help reach those who could benefit from these essential courses. #NBTS

This is BIG news for #EAL students. Human brains evolved to acquire oral comprehension first. As babies and toddler we can listen to, understand and follow words and instructions before we can speak, read or write them. By allowing EAL students to use a computer reader in day to day class work and then in #exams can help increase their comprehension and ease the cognitive load. Allowing students to show what they know in exams without reading fluency holding them back 👏 #InclusiveEducation
