The latest homelessness figures show that we have the highest recorded homeless in Ireland, with the number of children homeless with their families at 4,401 children, an 87% increase since the Governments plan Housing For All in 2021. In this Reboot Republic Podcast I talk with Louise Bayliss, Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator with Focus Ireland. We discuss the traumatic impact of homelessness on children and families, and what are the solutions: including a re-instating of the ban on no fault evictions and allocating priority to families homeless in social housing. Homelessness is not evitable, and we must end it. https://lnkd.in/e_Vyw4nt

Our latest blog is on the benefit cap, a policy that affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. We see on the frontline how the cap both increases the number of people who fall into homelessness and makes it harder for those trying to make their way out of homelessness. Give the blog a read on our website to find out what the cap is, how it works, and why it can be so damaging to people facing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/e3EQTdHh

Today marks the first day of Homelessness Week 2024. 45% of homelessness for women and children is primarily caused by domestic and family violence. On average, homelessness services across Australia are turning away almost 300 people each day, 80% of whom are women and children. Homelessness caused by domestic violence is preventable, and we all have the power to make a change. This Homelessness Week, we’re asking you to join our movement and pledge to stop violence and prevent homelessness for women and children. No woman should have to choose between escaping violence and having a roof over her head. By signing our pledge, you can help us build safer futures for all. We’re stronger together. A domestic violence experience is common among youth, single adults, and families who become homeless. For many, it is the immediate cause of their homelessness. Survivors of domestic violence may turn to homeless service programs seeking a safe temporary place to stay after fleeing an abusive relationship. Others may turn to homeless service programs primarily because they lack the economic resources to secure or maintain housing after leaving an abusive relationship. In 2023, approximately 10.4% percent of all Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing, and Safe Haven beds in homeless service systems were targeted to survivors of domestic violence and their families. 📃 Source: National Alliance to End Homelessness #endhomelessness #endthestigma #morecommonthanyouthink #winterwalk #boston #nyc #dontwalkby #domesticviolence

This is an excellent article by two leading advocates for affordable housing and eradicating homelessness. One key takeaway comes from this quote: "While people enduring homelessness often face serious challenges—joblessness, health problems, domestic abuse, racial discrimination—placing them rapidly into a permanent home with supportive services is the most effective way of keeping them permanently off the streets. A 2021 study showed that prioritizing housing with services decreased homelessness by 88 percent. It's also a good investment. An independent CDC panel found that for every dollar invested in such housing, taxpayers realize $1.44 in savings." - We all win if we do the right thing. The recent Supreme Court decision criminalizing homelessness does the opposite.
Punitive approaches only serve to send more people spiraling into homelessness. Instead, we know the real fix—getting people into homes with supportive services.
