Dear Pacifica Community, Once again, we find ourselves facing the devastating reality of wildfires in Southern California—fires that have caused deep loss, displacement, and heartbreak for so many in the Los Angeles region. Governor Newsom’s declaration of a State of Emergency is helping to mobilize important resources, but it is the care we show one another and the strength of communities that truly reminds us we are not alone. The Pacifica community carries a deep understanding of the pain these events bring. Many of our Pacifica members—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—live, work, and have connections to the areas now impacted by these fires. We have already begun to hear heartbreaking stories of homes lost, families affected, and lives disrupted. Our thoughts and hearts are with them and with everyone facing this unimaginable challenge. For those affected by or concerned about the fires, we've created a Los Angeles Wildfires Information & Resource Page: https://loom.ly/hFUZ-qQ This page will be updated as more information and support opportunities are developed and available. Please visit the page for updates on campus status and safety, academic continuity and options, mental health support, fire updates, and relief effort resources and involvement. ***YOUR SAFETY AND WELL-BEING ARE OUR TOP PRIORITIES. If you are affected by the fire, please reach out to your Program Chair, Supervisor, or Campus Safety as soon as you are able.*** With heartfelt care and hope, Dr. Leonie H. Mattison President & CEO

for the LA wildfires- resources for residents and mental health professionals and physicians: At least 18 people remain missing in the LA wildfires. Most of them are elderly, disabled, and minorities. The majority of the toxins from the wildfires are from burning plastic. Homes have had to be deep cleaned including the removal or emptying out of HVAC systems to eliminate smoke and ashes from toxins. Oceans are now considered contaminated from burning plastic and heavy metals. Here are some additional resources for people in need due to the wildfires: www.dhcs.ca.gov/Pages/... www.ca.gov/LAfires www.fema.gov/disaster/4856 lacounty.gov/emergency https://lacity.gov https://lnkd.in/gzMu-WGm... https://lnkd.in/gTz3kmGU... https://lnkd.in/gbVBMpmA https://lnkd.in/gCnwcDyD... https://lnkd.in/gyitYsWB...

I was saddened to see an article in the New York Times a couple days ago that reported how climate change is making Southwestern cities more dangerous for heat related injuries and deaths. The article reports that Phoenix had 31 straight days of 110 degree temperature or higher during the last calendar year, with dozens admitted for heat related burns or illnesses. When its that hot on the street, temperatures can rise on pavement to as high as 160 degrees. Innovations such as cool pavement can lower surface temperatures but are not effective lowering ambient temperatures. 15% of surface burn patents at the Arizona Burn Center are unhoused. I think city leaders are failing to see the linkage between economic development and human health. If sunbelt cities are to take part in the prosperity that lower taxes and costs of living afford, they must also consider the fact that many of these cities' streets were designed for the car, not for urban living. Increasing street trees and urban forestry are essential tools to future proof cities. Our work on the Las Vegas 2045 plan proved that the city was committing less than 1/2 an acre of parkland per thousand residents, most cities commit at least 30 or 70 acres (for its part, Phoenix has about 35 acres per 1000, Los Angeles about 8 per 1000). Yes, there are trees that can grow in hot arid climates that will lower ambient temperature, but they they require care and maintenance- in short, investment. This is another example where planners and urban designers for their part must focus more intently on evidence based tools to prove that our public infrastructure needs more attention to make it habitable for human life. Our cites are an ecosystems, we must treat them as such. #climatechange

Winter is here! The snow is coming! Stay safe out there this week! You can’t control the weather, but you can control how you prepare for it. Similarly, estate planning allows you to take control over what happens to your assets, health decisions, and guardianship of your children if something unexpected happens. You may not be able to predict the future, but you can plan for it. Planning to not have a plan is still a plan- but a bad one. #winteriscoming #willwegetsnow #planahead #estateplanning #lifecareplanning #preventionplanning #lawyerlisa

PSA: There's no such thing as good or bad people. As humans, all of us are capable of doing good things and all of us are capable of doing harm. But to make meaningful progress in building public safety, we must move beyond binaries and recognize the complex humanity within each individual. When we do that, we can address the root causes of harmful behavior and focus on rehabilitation and healing. By doing so, we can create a more just and compassionate society for all. #TransformativeJustice #HealingNotHate
