🏆 “Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation.” 🏆 ~Zig Ziglar 📞 I just got off a great call with Chuck Iverson (Mason McDuffie), who is moderating the panel at California Mortgage Bankers Association’s Mortgage Innovators Conference that I’ll be joining, along with Jonathan Foy (Polly), Terri Davis (CoreLogic), and Maria Moskver (Cloudvirga). I speak at conferences and on webinars in mortgage (I hustle my a$$ off) and know how much work goes into preparation if the audience will get value from it. It’s so refreshing when a leader drives that preparation (Chuck Iverson). That’s when you know it’s going to be a great session for the audience. They’re going to walk away being better off for having attended. 📣 Our session is titled, “What the rates?” As a marketer, I love it! I just wish I could take credit for coming up with it. ✅ We’ll cover strategies to increase revenue, lower costs, do more with less, highlight tech that’s making a big impact, and how to effect change in your organization (I admit that I went down a rabbit hole as to whether “effect change” or “affect change” is correct). We were out for lunch, my mortgage broker and I, and one of her favourite realtors. Conversation was light and easy, even as we talked about industry trends and a few recent nightmares. And then the realtor said: “You know what I like about you, PattI? You talk to me, not through me. Not very many lawyers are like that.” The tag line stuck: “Talking to you not through you.” And you know what? That’s what people want from their lawyer. Respectful communication that they can understand and relate to. Even if they’ve been in their biz a long time. Even if they work for a large institutional client. Even if they are in the C-Suite. Even if they are “sophisticated”. How you talk to people will determine the speed of your relationship development. To build strong and lasting relationships, talk to them, not through them. While it may seem crazy to turn down a substantial check, especially in the current hiring surge for mortgage originators, it's crucial to stay strategic. Prioritize understanding the company's trajectory, leadership, and financial stability. Ask critical questions like, "How will you support my business growth?" and "What steps will you take to help me reach my objectives?"
