As 2024 draws to a close, we’d like to reflect upon the year that has been and wrap up our wins and challenges as well as give thanks. The first big thank you goes out to you, our wonderful clients. Without you, none of this is possible. We’ve welcomed a few fabulous new businesses and bid farewell to a few as we continue to do our best to serve your needs. We thank you for your patience as we well as your support when we needed it. Second, my thanks goes out to my wonderful team. It’s well known that a great team is the first sign of a great business and I thank them for making me look good. They’ve allowed me to take a breath, be less stressed and take a few holidays with the family. Lastly, I’d like to thank our associates and referral partners for taking care of our clients and allowing us to provide a more holistic service. Caliyan Associates grew once again in revenue making it the 10th consecutive year of continued growth. Despite weak economic conditions and ever increasing costs to do business, we managed to navigate through keeping our fees affordable. The increased ATO activity around compliance was evident; we can now see the first signs of AI and data matching coming through in the ATO’s communications. Foreign income has become a target along with rental property deductions. We’ve seen the stress in the property market, with a lot of our clients offloading Victorian properties due to the combined attacks from high interest rates and land tax. We’ve also witnessed cash flows drying up in the face of falling demand and skittish buying sentiment. All in all, it’s been a year most clients would be happy to see the back of. Looking towards the future, we’ll be investing more into our team and our systems to increase turnaround times and service standards. Well shall look at growing again and expanding into different markets and locations. Most importantly, we’ll try to increase our intervention for clients who need help with their compliance needs. We’re now closing up for the Xmas 🎅 break and shall resume on Monday 6th Jan. Once again, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has helped CA navigate the year and here’s to looking at a bigger, brighter and better year ahead 🎉🇦🇺🥂

Having launched a service that provides a personalised review of forthcoming FHL changes, I have received a heart warming endorsement from Alex Norian FCCA who requested a review for his client and embedded it into a tax planning meeting. The reviews I produce compare the after tax finances of clients today with the post change scenario. They then go through numerous mitigation options with pros and cons and figurative analysis. There is still time for FHL owners to act and navigate the changes, minimising negative financial effect. But if you are a FHL owner and dont have a clear plan today, it is likely the efects will be very punitive. Whilst most of my reviews are a result of direct engagement with FHL operators, more and more accountants are contacting me to prepare the same for their clients. The cost of the service is very reasonable. I hope to assist as many FHL owners through the biggest change since 1982 as possible. Tens or even hundreds of thousands are at stake. Commonly, there are pre existing tax inefficiencies that I identify. “Thank you Rupert Chapman for the very useful assistance with a client of ours - who required pertinent advice on the structure for their FHL investments. We had been professionally engaged for a consultation & I thought I'd bring Rupert into the mix, having worked with him in the past & knowing his intimate knowledge of the industry. Thanks again for the valuable contribution Rupert - helped us achieve a 5-star Google Review from the client 👌”

🚨 Important Update for Property Investors & FHL Operators 🚨 The government has announced significant changes affecting Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHLs) starting April 2025. Here's what you need to know: 🔑 What’s Changing? - Special tax benefits for FHLs will no longer apply. - Income and gains from FHLs will be treated like any other property business. Key repealed benefits include: - Exemption from finance cost restriction rules. - Access to more favourable capital allowances. - Reliefs on capital gains for trading assets. - Inclusion as relevant earnings for pension contribution calculations. 📅 Effective Dates: - Income & Capital Gains Tax: From 6 April 2025. - Corporation Tax: From 1 April 2025. 💡 What Does This Mean for You? - Simplified reporting: FHL profits will be merged into your general property business. - Losses from FHLs can still be carried forward and offset against future property income. - One-off costs may arise from familiarising yourself with these changes, but ongoing savings are expected from reduced reporting complexity. 💷 Impact on the Economy: Estimated additional revenue for the government: £35M in 2025-26, increasing to £210M by 2028-29. 🔍 Next Steps: If you're operating or planning to invest in FHLs, it’s essential to review your portfolio’s tax and financial strategy. 🌟 Understanding the Tax Benefits of Long-Term Care Insurance 🌟 As professionals actively planning for our futures, it’s crucial to be aware of every opportunity to protect our financial well-being. Today, I want to shed light on a smart financial move that not only secures peace of mind but also offers substantial tax benefits: Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI). 📊 Why LTCI? Long-term care costs can unexpectedly hit your finances hard. LTCI helps cover these expenses, ensuring you receive the care you need without depleting your savings. But beyond this primary advantage, LTCI can significantly lighten your tax load. 💡 Key Tax Benefits: **Premium Deductions:**Depending on your age and the policy, premiums for qualified LTCI are often tax-deductible. The IRS sets annual limits on the deductible amount, and these limits generally increase with age, offering greater tax relief as you grow older. **Non-Taxable Benefits:**Benefits received from a qualified LTCI policy are typically not taxable. This means the payments you receive for long-term care services do not add to your taxable income, providing financial relief when you need it most. **State Tax Incentives:**Many states offer additional tax incentives for policyholders, ranging from tax credits to deductions on state income tax. It’s worth exploring your state’s specific benefits to maximize your savings. **Employer Contributions:**If you're fortunate to have an employer who contributes to your LTCI, those contributions are generally tax-free. It’s a win-win situation, ensuring you have coverage while not adding to your taxable income. 🔍 Proactive Planning: Taking steps now to secure LTCI can lead to substantial tax benefits down the road. It’s not just about securing care for the future but also about making smart financial decisions today that can enhance your overall fiscal health. 📈 Get Informed, Stay Protected: I encourage everyone to explore the nuances of LTCI and its tax benefits. Connect with a financial advisor to understand how this can fit into your broader financial strategy and provide that extra layer of security for you and your loved ones. Have you considered LTCI as part of your financial planning? Let's discuss how it can benefit you! #FinancialPlanning #LongTermCareInsurance #TaxBenefits #FutureSecurity #SmartInvesting #WealthManagement

On December 27th, a fortunate individual struck it rich by winning a Mega Millions jackpot of $1,269,000,000! This sole winner now faces a crucial decision. They can choose between a lump sum of $579.1 million or an annuity that totals $1.269 billion over 30 years. To make the best economic decision, we need to calculate the net present value (NPV) break-even point for both options, as well as the internal rate of return (IRR) that equates them. Since the winner lives in California, they will incur the highest income tax withholding rate of 37% on both options. Thus, the comparison is straightforward: we are looking at a net annuity payout of $779.4 million over 30 years versus a lump sum payout of $360.297 million after taxes. Time is money, and we can earn on this amount. Upon calculating the break-even point, we find an IRR of 6.169%. When adjusted for the 37% withholding tax, this results in an effective interest rate of 9.8%. Considering that the S&P 500 has achieved a compound annual growth rate of approximately 11.29% over the past 30 years, we can confidently assert that if we anticipate future performance to align with this trend, the lump sum is the superior choice. What would your decision be? 🤔 😊 🤓

The "Why" Behind Fixed Price R&D When I was a kid growing up in New Zealand, I was hooked on a TV show called Beyond 2000. It was all about futuristic innovations and bold ideas—basically a window into a world where anything seemed possible. I loved the way it seemed like science fiction became science fact, and I think that’s where my fascination with science and technology first began. I was also a big fan of the DeLorean time machine too! Fast forward to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I found myself working closely with Pfizer and Moderna. Seeing the brilliance that went into developing vaccines reignited that same sense of awe I had as a kid. It reminded me how incredible science can be—and just how much teamwork and creativity it takes to get there. That sense of admiration is a big part of why I started Fixed Price R&D. I genuinely love working with small and micro businesses that are innovating and pushing boundaries in their own way. It’s hugely rewarding to understand and appreciate the work my clients are doing—seeing how they’re not only moving their businesses forward but also making waves in their industries in new and exciting ways. To play even a small part in helping them achieve that feels like such a privilege. Working on R&D claims is also a fantastic way for me to use my Chartered Accounting skills. It’s an area where my commitment to integrity and professionalism really comes into play. These claims require precision, an in-depth understanding of both technical and financial details, and a solid ethical framework. I take pride in ensuring every claim I work on is thorough, accurate, and compliant—giving my clients peace of mind while helping them unlock the funding they deserve. At the same time, I know the R&D tax credit process can feel like an intimidating maze for a lot of businesses. That’s where I come in—I love breaking things down, solving complex puzzles, and making complicated stuff simple and easy to understand. For me, R&D claims are like the ultimate puzzle: they have layers of technical, financial, and regulatory complexity, and the challenge is finding the right way to piece it all together. I get a real kick out of helping businesses uncover the value in their work and making sure they get the recognition—and the funding—they deserve. At Fixed Price R&D, I’ve kept things straightforward on purpose. With a fixed-fee model, there’s no guesswork or surprises, so my clients can focus on what they do best: creating, innovating, and building the future. I want the whole process to feel approachable and empowering, not stressful or overwhelming. At the end of the day, I’m driven by the belief that every successful R&D claim is more than just a financial win—it’s an investment in the next wave of innovation. #RDTaxCredits #ResearchAndDevelopment #InnovationFunding #TaxRelief #STEMBusiness #SupportingSMEs #SimplifyingComplexity
