At C&B, a common phrase is “the people make this place great.” Without context, this can seem like a generic and canned phrase. So to offer up a bit more clarity as to who “the people” are, below is just a sample of those individuals who help create greatness here: Stephen Liske, GBDS, Cassie Lowery, Zach Meyer, Parker Scott, CEBS– Incredible subject matter experts and consultants that I’m blessed to call friends. Taylor Orton, CEBS, Adam Rathje– Patient and thoughtful mentors who have taught me innumerable lessons. They happen to be savants and good people to boot. Joey Backus, Jared Sweeney, AAI, Brad Feldott, Kim Beck – Rockstars that have pushed me to be more, care more, and prepare more each day I walk into the office. Melanie Hannah, Krista Sigman – Colleagues that fully embody the definition of “consultant” - able to navigate the incredible complexities of projects, policies, and Benefits in general. Happy Friday! I tend to get a lot of folks reaching out to inquire about how I got into my role in the #NIL space… which is a question I tend to ask myself a lot, actually. I often times think about how I got to where I am over this short but eventful journey. 1. I was beyond fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I believe everything happens for a reason and I was right where I needed to be when the Director of NIL opportunity opened up at Ohio State. 2. People! I have been blessed to have so many great leaders and mentors that have poured into me and my experiences over the last 4 years. 3. Accessibility/Visibility, being these two things early in my career has allowed me to be in rooms and receive opportunities that I otherwise would have missed! Our generation sees value in flexible work schedule and remote work (which is completely acceptable and necessary!), but a lot of opportunities come when someone pops in or by your office when no one else is around. 4. Seize the opportunity. Opportunities are going to come and go, so just like anything else, you have to capitalize when they present themselves. How can you parlay this opportunity into your next? 5. Add Value!!! Be a value add in any capacity that you possibly can. It doesn’t have to be within the scope of your job description or responsibilities! Lastly, just be a good person. Showing gratitude and appreciation to your teammates doesn’t take a lot of effort, but boy can it go a long way. #Networking #Career #Sports #Business #Marketing

Years ago I took a job at Herman Miller as Director of Product and Portfolio Strategy that you won't find on my LinkedIn profile. This is because, to put it bluntly, I was lousy at it. It was a new role that we'd envisioned as something creative and conceptual, but instead it needed a great deal of process rigor and a strong attention to detail. That's not me. As result, I went to my manager after four months and said, "I don't think I'm very good at this. It might not be a great fit." Thankfully, he responded, "Yes, I've noticed that you're struggling and I no longer think it's a good fit either. Let's look for something different to take better advantage of your gifts and I'll find someone better for this role." I think a lot about that exchange. It's possible that I could have slogged my way through it for a few years or I could have imagined him saying, "Figure it out." Instead, he created an environment where I could raise my hand and say there's a problem, even when the problem was me (cue my T-Swift fans). When I see research about the value of psychological safety in the workplace, I think of that experience. #psychologicalsafety #imtheproblemitsme
