My latest blog post, "Resumes in a Bottle: Getting No Response to Job Applications," is available now: https://lnkd.in/geBV2xGk "If you've ever felt the sting of being ghosted on a dating app, let me introduce you to its cousin: the silence of the job application void."

Really? My name is... So it came to my attention that when I was looking for a job years ago, I might have been automatically rejected by application filters... Due to application filtering by name and gender (among other things). Someone mentioned that they made a filter for a job application system that automatically filters you out if you hit certain criteria. One of which... Is if your name is not standard. For example, if you don't capitalize the first letter of your name, if your name is null, if your name is not roman alphabetic, etc. Another criteria mentioned by a filter maker being if your gender (my legal gender is not equals to 'M' and not equals to 'F') is not listed or, to be more exact, not matching the list of eligible genders. Basically, if you get filtered out, the recruiter never sees your application. All because the filter did not consider certain things as valid input. The filter's goal makes sense: drop applications that aren't paying attention to the requirements. The problem comes when people are paying attention, but the application filter isn't ready for unexpected input (and there are quite a few inputs that might be hard to expect without encountering it). John Graham-Cumming and Patrick McKenzie have great blog articles about name related issues that applies to a lot of other things. For those making filters or trying to consider in valid inputs for strings, including names, I recommend reading those so that you can include consideration for names that could break your system. Sincerely, "return void;" TL Note: "return void;" as a name could potentially break some systems because " would end the name string, cause the program method to run return void; as a return (ending the method prematurely in some cases) and then " would close the remaining string. (It isn't common that such a thing is an issue, but yes, I have usernames like this. It is great when your username calls the remove targeting function in games, btw.) (I feel like at least one dev will go "It was you!" if they happen to read this).

Has anyone ever had someone text them and ask "Are you still interested in the -------- position " and then she asked if she could call me (I didn't remember applying to the position she had stated) and of course, I said YES! She then called me and asked me to install the app "Hirely". She said she would stay on the phone with me and navigate through the app. It seemed way too strange to me and she sent me another text while on the phone that went to my Spam texts, however; I do legitimate calls and texts this happens with but due to the rush of it all, I hung up and blocked her. Anyone heard of or utilized this app? If so, is it legit? I, of course, then went to read complaints but they all came from employers stating they stole a job description and posted it without permission. Just needing to know if this is a scam or is it legit? TIA!! #hropportunities #recruiters #recruiterjobs #talentacquisition #2024opportunities

On average, it took a bit over two and a half minutes to apply to a job. If company size doubles, the application time increases by 5%. If company size increases by a factor of 10, then the app time increases by 20%. https://lnkd.in/gb3Pm32R
