🌐 Yesterday was International Biodiversity Day, a day declared by the United Nations to bring attention to the importance of our planet's diverse ecosystems. At Callirius, in this occasion we want to highlight the crucial role of wetland ecosystems in preserving biodiversity, particularly here in Europe 🌱💦. 🐸🦆🦢🐍 Wetlands are among the world's most productive environments. They provide a natural habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species and are a source of biodiversity that is crucial for ecological health. Wetlands cover about 6% of the Earth's land surface and contain 20-30% of the planet's soil carbon (1). Beyond this, they serve as carbon sinks, reducing the impact of climate change 🌡️ by storing up to 1.5 times as much carbon as tropical forests 🌴 (2) 🌍 Particularly in Europe, peatland ecosystems are significant. They are home to unique species that cannot be found anywhere else. However, these ecosystems are under threat, with an estimated loss of 64% of the world's wetlands since the 1900s (2). ⚠️ 💵 Wetlands also provide immense economic value, estimated at $47 trillion per year globally, through services like water filtration 💧, storm protection 🌧️, and tourism 📸 (3) 🤝 The theme of this year is “Be Part of the Plan”, calling all types of stakeholders to support the Biodiversity Plan as they can. Corporations and organizations can play a vital role in enhancing biodiversity. Sponsoring local, high-impact peatland projects, like those in the state of Mecklenburg-vorpommern in Germany, is just one example of how we can make a difference. Get in touch with us and let's take action today to ensure these ecosystems are preserved for future generations. 🌳 #PartofThePlan #InternationalBiodiversityDay #Conservation #Wetlands #peatlands #sustainability #carbonprojects https://lnkd.in/efX5CMn 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 1. 🌍🌱 International Day for Biological Diversity, is when we celebrate the incredible variety of life on our planet and share reminders of how important it is to act on biodiversity loss. Biodiversity supports ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, has an important role to play. Healthy ecosystems provide essential services such as pollination, climate regulation, and water purification. However, biodiversity is under threat from human activities. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the planet has lost 68% of its vertebrate wildlife populations since 1970. This loss has profound implications for ecosystem stability and human survival. Also lets not forget how - Over 80% of our diet is provided by plants, and we rely on the diversity of species for nutrition and food security. - Approximately 75% of global food crops depend on animal pollination. - Forests, which harbor a significant portion of the world's biodiversity, are home to more than 80% of terrestrial species of animals, plants, and fungi. We, those who are living today, must protect and preserve biodiversity for future generations. 🌿🦋 #BiodiversityDay #ProtectOurPlanet #Sustainability #EcosystemHealth #FutureGenerations https://lnkd.in/efX5CMn

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted in December 2022, sets an ambitious plan to transform our relationship with Nature by 2030. This ground-breaking framework aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, benefiting both people and the planet. At its core, the GBF outlines four long-term goals for 2050, focusing on ecosystem integrity, sustainable use of resources, equitable benefit sharing, and effective implementation. To achieve these goals, the framework lays out 23 action-oriented targets for 2030, addressing major threats to biodiversity such as habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. One of the most notable targets is the protection of at least 30% of land and sea areas by 2030, a significant increase from current levels. This "30x30" goal has gained traction globally as a key strategy for preserving Earth's vital ecosystems. The GBF complements the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, recognising that biodiversity conservation is inextricably linked to sustainable development. It calls for urgent, transformative action from governments and society to create a world where we truly live "in harmony with Nature" by 2050. As we face accelerating biodiversity loss worldwide, this framework provides a crucial roadmap for preserving the planet's ecosystems and species. The question now is: how can your organisation contribute to these ambitious yet essential goals? #Biodiversity #Sustainability #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/dBVYqh26

Be #PartOfThePlan! 🌍 What does the 2024 International Day for Biodiversity Mean to You?🌳 🐋 In December 2022, the landmark Biodiversity Plan (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) was adopted to reverse the loss of nature by 2050. This year, the United Nations' International Day for Biodiversity is a global call for action to encourage everyone to be #PartOfThePlan. As part of our mission to create a better world for future generations, ASUENE is proud to join the global community in advancing biodiversity protection. 🐝 🌿 This year, the 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 16 CBD) will be held in Colombia from 21 October to 1 November 2024! 🚀 🗓️ The three focus areas are: - Translating the Biodiversity Plan into national actions: Parties have to demonstrate how their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) align with the Biodiversity Plan. 🎯 - Mobilize and bolster the means of implementation: Key priorities include closing the financing gaps and making implementation tools accessible to all countries. 🌐 - Accelerate progress on access and benefit-sharing: Parties are expected to agree on how genetic resources can be shared fairly and equitably. 🤝 Did you know? Investors care about biodiversity: A study published this year surveyed 832 global companies from different sectors from 2011-2020 indicated that institutional investors, especially those with long‐term investment horizons, are interested in companies’ biodiversity commitments. Through their representatives on the board, these investors have requested information on biodiversity initiatives. 💬 🌱 Why global biodiversity trends matter for companies: Another study indicates that investors have started to ask for a risk premium in light of uncertainty associated with emerging biodiversity regulations. By examining a large sample of international stocks, the researchers found negative stock price reactions for companies with large biodiversity footprints following the Kunming Declaration and the launch of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures. 📢 📈 What role do you want to play as #PartOfThePlan? Join us in making a difference for our planet's future! 🌍 🌸 #PartOfThePlan #InternationalDayForBiodiversity #biodiversity #sustainability #climatechange
