The 2024 ACEEE's Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, August 4-9, will bring together professionals from around the globe to the Asilomar Conference Grounds to collaborate, debate and advance the technologies, practices and research necessary to equitably decarbonize the building sector in a manner that addresses the urgency of the climate crisis. The 2024 theme is Equity and Climate Action: Time to Deliver. Two conference co-chairs are, Jessica Granderson of LBNL and Karma Sawyer of PNNL. I am part of two teams to present: A poster on a collaborative work between LBNL and Los Angeles County: Passive and low-power efficiency measures reduce energy costs and improve thermal safety of residents in disadvantaged communities of Los Angeles County A paper (authors: Jeetika Malik, Max Wei, Tianzhen Hong) for Panel 7 Market Transformation: The Sufficiency Imperative – why deep energy conservation is needed to achieve climate and equity targets and how might it be achieved? #ACEEE https://lnkd.in/gJmVGYNS

Ben Pettitt, Sector Lead for Real Estate at IES is presenting at the European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (eceee) 2024 Zero Carbon Industry event taking place in Antwerp, Belgium on 30th & 31st January 2024. Ben’s presentation “Sleeping Digital Twins: Exploring the appetite, benefits and challenges of whole-life performance modelling” is part of Panel 1: Processes and technologies to meet future challenges on Wednesday, 31st January from 11:00 - 12:00. During his presentation Ben will review the findings from our recent collaborative industry whitepaper that was inspired by the theory that existing digital design models, also referred to as Sleeping Digital Twins, harness significant untapped potential to improve the performance of our current building stock. Ben will address the various challenges which are currently preventing the many Sleeping Digital Twins in existence from being utilised beyond the design stage and put forward recommendations for a best practice approach for reinstating these models as part of a whole-life performance workflow. He will also outline the benefits which can be unlocked through the improved digitisation of building performance, and the crucial role this can play in the race to decarbonise. I'm looking forward to speaking at the upcoming The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Summer Study for Energy Efficiency in Buildings to share results from a new collaborative paper I co-authored with Robert Johnson, PMP at E Source on residential #gas #loadflexibility. Gas demand response and load flexibility programs are still relatively nascent, and have potential to help gas utilities meet emerging needs around #resiliency, #decarbonization, and system management during severe winter storms. But too often, pilot designs are largely just being copied from electric utilities, which risks leading to lackluster results. We reviewed the results of virtually every residential utility pilot to date, took a big-picture look at what these programs should ideally be trying to achieve, and considered how different measures (from smart thermostats and water heater controls to behavioral strategies) might best help meet gas utility needs going forward. If you'll be at the Summer Study and want to hear me geek out on gas load management, come check out my presentation on Tuesday, August 6th! And if you're curious about the topic but won't be in attendance, I'm also planning to share the full paper after the conference wraps up.

How can real estate owners make their heating systems more sustainable and efficient? This is the question that Voltgoed˜, a start-up from the Brainport Eindhoven region, is trying to answer. Voltgoed provides a complete service for designing, developing, realizing and operating energy systems for buildings, using heat pumps and thermal storage technologies. They do that from start to finish, says co-founder Horst Fietje: “That’s exactly where the difference lies with how others approach it. Instead of just giving good advice, we guide a building owner from the ideation phase to operation when everything is ready.” In this article, you can learn more about Voltgoed's story, vision, and achievements. You can also find out how they are planning to scale up their business and reach more customers in the Netherlands and abroad, as well as to develop new products and collaborate with partners in the energy sector. New Call for Papers! Net-Zero Retrofit of the Building Stock Deadline for abstracts: 28 October 2024 (noon GMT) How might the building stock transition towards #NetZero? How big a change is achievable? At what cost? And what are the theoretical and practical factors that determine both the overall potential as well as the #transition process? Although these questions might lend themselves to a large-scale, aggregate perspective (considering issues like total capital cost, long-term targets for the deployment of low-zero carbon technologies, national and local energy efficiency policies, etc); any changes will be enacted on individual buildings. This special issue will explore these topics, from both a top-down (national, urban or local stock level) standpoint, but also a bottom-up (building level) point of view. Guest editors: Daniel Godoy-Shimizu and Philip Steadman (University College London) More details: https://lnkd.in/g6Mr6_Zn

HEMANTH LINGAMGUNTA Modern green technology can be integrated into historic buildings without altering their aesthetics through several methods: 1. Energy-Efficient Systems: Implement systems like interior storm windows to improve insulation while preserving original window features, reducing energy loss without compromising the building's appearance [2]. 2. Smart Building Technology: Utilize IoT and AI for monitoring and maintenance, allowing for real-time data collection on conditions without visible alterations [3]. 3. Renewable Energy Solutions: Install solar panels discreetly on less visible roof areas, ensuring they blend with the building's character while providing energy benefits [2][3]. 4. Passive Design Enhancements: Enhance existing architectural features, such as operable windows and awnings, to improve natural ventilation and energy efficiency, maintaining historical integrity [2]. 5. Sustainable Materials: Use eco-friendly materials for repairs that match the historic character, ensuring that any modifications respect the original design [1]. These approaches ensure that historic buildings remain functional and sustainable while preserving their cultural significance.
