An ultrasonic flow meter works based on the principle of measuring the transit time of ultrasonic signals. A pair of transducers alternately act as a transmitter and receiver, sending signals at an angle through the fluid. The meter measures the transit times of the ultrasonic waves traveling with and against the flow. An important point to note is that the transit times are different because the signal travels faster when moving with the flow and slower when moving against it. By using these transit times and applying a formula based on the average flow velocity and the pipe's cross-sectional area, the flow rate is calculated.
