Presume competence with autistic children using AAC? Assess. Don't guess. Every autistic child has a unique learner profile. As a practitioner with 20 years of clinical experience, I have learned that NO two children are the same. Respecting neurodivergent differences means taking the effort (with reliable and valid assessment measures) to get to know how each child learns. For practitioners, it is irresponsible to automatically presume that the majority autistic children learn a certain way. The only assumptions we build off of are from are from (both direct and indirect) assessment tools. Using this, we can evaluate and formulate a starting picture of the child's unique learning profile across different skill and language domains. With the information we have from parents and the assessments, we then take the next steps to take to build a foundation for language and social communication. Dynamic and functional AAC assessments can guide practitioners. Please join us (and the cohort) this evening as we discuss dynamic and functional AAC assessments from the Dr. Lilith Reuter-Yuill, Ph.D, CCC-SLP, BCBA-D, LBA. We look forward to seeing you there! #AAC #autism #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #everydaywecareaboutautisticpeople

I am pleased to have been given the opportunity to finish a few of the Oliver McGowan series' e-learning modules. My profession frequently deals with ASC/Autism Spectrum Condition, therefore knowing so much more about it from these modules just makes it easier for me to comprehend and assist. I believe that society can only benefit from an understanding of this condition as it appears to be more prevalent in today's world. Take a look: https://lnkd.in/eRWYwpRR

ABA Observation #5 So much emphasis and resources are directed to early intervention. There is good reason for this as early intervention is crucial. That being said I wish there was more resources directed to the transitional period (16-21). This can be an extremely challenging time and the outcomes can impact a person for the rest of their lives. Learning how to operate independently and learning skills specific to a person next step whether in be a group home, getting a job, going to college, or any other endeavor is arguably as important as getting early intervention. Unfortunately supports for young adults is significantly less than the supports that we have for children. How can we better support young adults in their transition to what’s next?

Teaching Problem-Solving Skills Early On Problem-solving is the most important skill any individual should have in today’s world. What better way to inculcate this skill from the early stages of growing up? Here’s the SODAS method that will help your child identify and find solutions to real-world problems: • S: Identify the problem SITUATION. • O: Consider the OPTIONS for the situation. • DA: List the DISADVANTAGES and ADVANTAGES of each option. • S: Choose a SOLUTION and follow through. By teaching children the SODAS method, we equip them with the tools to think critically and make informed decisions. Let’s help our kids develop these essential skills for their future success. #GetSetParent #GSPFamily #ProblemSolving #ProblemSolvingSkills #PersonalityDevelopment #ChildDevelopment #SODASMethod #ProblemSolution #ParentingProblems #ParentingSolutions #ParentingHacks #Parenting101 #ProblemSolvingTips
