Well intended, but very inaccurate #Dyslexia info in this TV chat by laypersons who are neither licensed nor trained to diagnose Dyslexia; just like having heart surgery does not mean you have the expertise equivalent to a heart surgeon, having Dyslexia does not make your knowledge on Dyslexia equivalent to researchers / brain scientists who publish scientific research on Dyslexia and many other learning challenges. Well intended, but inaccurate information on news channels can prevent families from making well-informed choices to seek proper and best of care services that are provided by licensed healthcare professionals based on peer-reviewed, scientific research, not personal opinions, white papers, others’ experiences or any other data source that is NOT of the same caliber as medical information given to patients by medical doctors. #1 error in this TV laypersons chat: In the USA, schools never diagnose dyslexia or any disorders listed in the DSM-5. Those diagnoses are most commonly given by licensed clinical psychologists, licensed neuropsychologists & licensed speech-language pathologists. Inaccuracy #2: Evidence-based, peer-reviewed, scientific research shows that we can early identify (age 4) & early intervene to actually prevent reading disorders (including reading difficulties in Dyslexia). We have RCT tested & proven programs that help more than 97% of 5 year olds (with and without the genetics for dyslexia) learn to read at or above grade level & NOT need SEN or SpEd services or accommodations or supports or assistive tech. Asking parents to wait for teachers to “spot” unproven symptoms or signs of Dyslexia, instead of asking them to talk to their pediatrician, psychologist, neuropsychologist, speech-therapist or other licensed healthcare professional will only allow students to fall further behind.
