🟢 CISL is one of 100 organisations and leaders who've signed Nature4Climate's open letter, pushing for nature's outcomes at #COP29. We attended both COP29 and #COP16 in Cali because we believe the nature and the climate crises should be tackled together to create meaningful action. https://lnkd.in/gkcukUub In the final days of negotiations in Baku, the urgency to act has never been greater. And this urgent statement is calling on parties to address the severe nature finance gap, which is threatening progress on climate goals and an ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). Closing the nature finance gap would: ✔ Unlock solutions for a sustainable future. ✔ Enable countries to embed #NatureBasedSolutions into their Nationally Determined Contributions #NDCs. ✔ Drive meaningful progress on climate and biodiversity. 📢 As negotiations reach their conclusion, bold commitments are needed to prioritise nature at the heart of climate finance. 💬 Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/eHHhj-bK

Curious about the focus for #COP29? This year’s gathering at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Azerbaijan, the "Finance COP," will be crucial, as countries will look to secure additional public and private financing for climate initiatives, writes Laurence Blandford of WSP in Canada. According to Blandford, without significant additional funding and financing — for domestic projects and to support developing country action — keeping warming well below two degrees and closer to 1.5 degrees will be elusive and we will risk catastrophic climate change outcomes, putting our societies in greater peril. #environment #climate #policy #finance United Nations United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Actual Media Inc. https://lnkd.in/gNFv4P39

What Small Island Developing States face today is what we all will face tomorrow. The final agreement by governments to set a target of providing “at least” USD$300billion of climate finance by 2035 at the end of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s #COP29, signals a starting point from which to move forward into 2025 and COP30 in Brazil. Given the reality that 2024 is on track to be the warmest year on record and first year that exceeds 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, heightened ambition and commitment are essential. Coastal communities around the world are increasingly vulnerable to ocean heating, acidification, sea level rise and the destruction of coastal and ocean animal and plant species. What they face today is what we all will face tomorrow; it is vital to mobilise finance and reduce exposure to Ocean Risk. In this moment we need resilience. We are committed to strengthening our resolve to build a regenerative and sustainable capital market for the Ocean, one that drives mitigation, adaptation, and resilience for all. 💪 We must act now. We’re calling on political and business leaders worldwide to join us in engaging a new generation of financial backers necessary to put capital to work for the Ocean, our planet's largest carbon sink and biosphere. Invest in the Ocean, invest in coastal communities, invest in our planet. 🌎 #BackBlue #SDG14 #OurPlanetOurOcean

When it comes to climate finance at #COP29, the gap between developed and developing nations remains stark. Developed countries continue to push for an investment-led approach, raising concerns for Pacific nations. With worsening climate impacts, investment in the region might be deemed "too risky"—leaving vulnerable communities without the support they urgently need. https://lnkd.in/g2cXY42C

𝗦𝗼, #𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟵 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱? 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗟𝗘 𝟲 Finally (after years of delay) COP29 approved Article 6 of the #ParisAgreement setting global standards for the #carbonmarket. 🤞🏽If/when working this could see a reliable carbon market of $250bn targeting climate mitigation. 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗗 Last year there were $700mn pledged to help emerging economies recover from the worst impacts of climate change - this year the COP agreed this fund will begin paying out next year. 🤞🏽COP29 also got boosts from Rio as G20 leaders backed scaling up climate finance from ‘billions to trillions’ 𝗡𝗗𝗖 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 The UK and Brazil was the forces of hope this year, both with updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) towards reaching net zero. 🤞🏽 Both will now cut emissions by 2035! (Tiny Norway update; Jonas Gahr Støre (Arbeiderpartiet) wasnt even there, and no, we did not come with anything substantial on NDCs, but did provide carbon finance to Asia Pacific developing countries' Article 6 projects. However, cash is not king if you earn it from irreversible damages, or?) Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this NAP Global Network report on how countries are using the USD 3 million funding from the Green Climate Fund for #adaptation planning! ✨ Overall, the GCF’s support for the national adaptation planning (NAP) processes has significantly advanced global adaptation efforts, but continued and enhanced support is still needed to transition from planning to implementing adaptation priorities, leveraging the experiences and lessons learned from the initial funding window. 🌡️ According to the World Meterological Organization, 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record as warming temporarily hits the 1.5 degree threshold established in the Paris Agreement. As unnatural disasters strike different parts of the world, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities in the Global South, the need for adaptation is more urgent than ever. 💰 This highlights the importance of stepping up on adaptation financing as countries gather in Baku for COP29 to negotiate the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance #NCQG. According to the Adaptation Gap Report released by UNEP last week, there is a very large adaptation finance gap. Whereas adaptation finance needs range from USD 215-387 billion/year, the 2022 international public adaptation finance flows to developing countries was only USD 27.5 billion.
Over 100 countries are driving their national adaptation plan (NAP) processes forward with the support from the Green Climate Fund Readiness Programme. Momentum on adaptation is real! As COP 29 is underway, our experts Maribel Hernandez, Orville Grey, Christian Ledwell and Juanyu (Geneva) Yang dive into these NAP Readiness proposals’ latest data to: 💵 Understand how countries have used USD 3 million available from the GCF for adaptation planning. 🔎 Identify gaps and opportunities to ramp up the implementation of national adaptation priorities by 2030. 🌱 Share recommendations to use these resources more strategically to accelerate the transition from planning to implementing countries’ NAPs. 🌍 As COP29 brings world leaders, organizations, and activists together, it's clear: the stakes have never been higher for the humanitarian sector. Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it’s a humanitarian crisis multiplier. With each degree of warming, more communities face displacement, food insecurity, and health crises. With the outcomes of COP29, we hope to see concrete commitments that will enable the humanitarian sector to respond faster, adapt better, and build resilience for the most vulnerable populations - “we cannot afford to wait any longer”. https://lnkd.in/eAEF3nTU #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #ClimateAction #HumanitarianAid #ResilientCommunities
