Detention ponds are an integral part of any drainage system in cities throughout the nation. In Texas, where the topography is fairly flat, the need for detention becomes all the more important. The purpose of detention is to mimic the natural topography by discharging stormwater offsite in a manner that closely resembles drainage on the parcel as if it had never been disturbed. To highlight this point, imagine a single drop of rain and how long it would take for that drop to travel across a flat field of grasses, shrubs, and trees, and ultimately to the drainage ditch. It could take hours for that drop to make it to the ditch. Now if we stripped off all of the grass, shrubs, and trees and paved the site with concrete, how long do you think that same drop of rainwater might take to get to the ditch? Minutes, right? Now imagine what would happen if every property drained quickly into the ditches, creeks, and streams. It would be just like rush hour traffic: more water than available conveyance! By storing the right amount of water and then releasing it at a controlled rate using a restrictor, we are able to mimic the pre-existing conditions and drain the pond (and hence the property) as if it were never developed, as represented by the yellow line in the hydrograph. 🌾From wide open spaces to ancient and current beaver dams, this field visit had it all. This project has been keeping our natural resources, civil engineering, and surveying teams busy. Y2 is leading this stream stabilization and headcuts project located on Lone Tree Creek. The headcuts are threatening wet meadows and contributing excessive sediment into the downstream North Platte River. Y2 is identifying a design approach to stabilize the headcuts to protect and reestablish wet meadows above the headcuts, slowing further sediment contributions to the downstream North Platte River.
