"Del and Williams’ mother, Irena Politano, allowed their son’s instincts and high-speed dreams to dictate their navigational process. They relied on resources from organizations like Autism Speaks for guidance, but said that ultimately, Williams guided Del and his wife through the journey as much as they directed their son."

As a woman and mother, I’ve experienced barriers and already see them showing up in my 2-year-old daughter life. I strive daily to show her that anything is possible -by achieving my very own dreams.
Shift & Play was born for this very reason.
Our daughters and future generations deserve better. Let’s break these barriers and show them their dreams are limitless.
What will you do to bridge this gap?

Play truly is magic - can you believe that it only takes 20 repetitions to create a synapse during play, compared to 400 repetitions in other non-play based activities? Brain development truly is hinged on the powers of play, and not only do children have fun, but they are also learning whilst playing!

As the cool, crisp air of fall begins to settle in, our household is especially thankful for the cozy comforts of the season—football games, warm bowls of soup, and, surprisingly, attic fans. Yes, you read that right—attic fans!
For Tommy, the attic fan is the highlight of the season. It’s more than just cooling down the house; the steady hum and airflow bring him a sense of calm and joy. The simple rhythm of the fan is something he looks forward to each year, and it reminds me of the importance of routine and sensory experiences in creating comfort.
In our work advocating for autism and disability inclusion, we often focus on the big picture—creating accessible education, employment, and community spaces. But it's just as important to celebrate the little things that bring comfort and peace, whether it’s a favorite activity, sound, or tradition.
As we wind down the week, I encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate those simple pleasures, both for ourselves and for those we love. These small joys can recharge us and remind us why we do the important work we do.
Here’s to a season of gratitude, comfort, and inclusion for all. And for Tommy, here’s to the attic fan, the unsung hero of fall!

Ball play can help children with developmental disabilities develop many skills, including motor skills, social skills, and cognitive skills. It teaches teamwork, problem-solving, gravity, cause and effect, and motor planning. Like all kids, our students love ball games outdoors and in gym!

It's Tip Tuesday! 🌟 When playing pickleball with a child who has Autism, consider using softer, brightly colored balls to enhance visibility and make catching easier. Keep the game paced to their comfort and include regular breaks. This can help make sports fun and accessible, promoting both physical and social skills! 🏓💙
