Why is Zoom, despite it's many flaws, a killer app. Today, I did my first Futurespaces webinar using StreamYard. The speaker Chelsi Cocking Cockling, a media artist and a MIT Media Lab Alum, did an absolutely fantastic job. The Zoom-killer, Streamyard, however had some issues. In some ways, it was amazing, great control over the slides, easy to customize the look, control speaker views etc. In some ways absolutely great. But... it was missing the killer feature, a sense of presence. We didn't' see the attendees roll in, see familiar names and faces. People couldn't jump camera-on. It felt super controlled, super professional, but totally sterile. Futurespaces on Zoom is janky as hell. but I'm starting to accept that clumsiness, that warmth, the sense of sharing time and space, even virtually with other humans. So, it's back to the garage.
