🚨New publication alert! IJPP has just published our article about the impact of exposure to partisan news on social polarization and vote choice in the context of the last Brazilian elections. Full text here: https://lnkd.in/e2j2U5WH We use a unique dataset linking behavioral web-tracking data of 2,200 internet users (📱and 💻) and 4 survey waves with the same respondents during the 2022 elections. We found no evidence that using partisan news changes polarization levels or affects vote choice during the campaign, but there are some small and inconsistent effects of trust in news. Our findings corroborate what studies (mostly in the Western world) have found before. All while investigating a scenario where partisanship isn’t as stable, and we would expect information-related variables to be more relevant, in line with the minimal-effects paradigm. This is another article from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism Trust in News project, and I was fortunate to work with a stellar team Amy A. Ross Arguedas Benjamin Toff Sayan Banerjee Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Richard Fletcher. This election project is one of my favorites ever, so always great to see another piece out!

In our latest article, Camila Mont'Alverne, Amy A. Ross Arguedas, Sayan Banerjee, Benjamin Toff, Richard Fletcher, and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen examine the impact of online partisan news consumption on voting behaviour and social polarisation during Brazil's 2022 presidential elections, using a unique dataset that links behavioural web-tracking with longitudinal survey results. Contrary to common concerns, the study finds no significant effects of partisan news on political outcomes, with trust in news serving as a weak and inconsistent moderating factor. By focusing on a Global South democracy with unique media and political characteristics, this research challenges assumptions based on Western contexts and highlights the need for more nuanced, cross-regional studies. New poll reveals Latinos are skeptical but uncertain about online misinformation, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to empower our community. The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas' (DDIA) latest research dives deep into how U.S. Latinos consume and perceive online content, especially in light of the upcoming 2024 elections. While most Latinos don't blindly believe everything they see online, the concerning part is the widespread uncertainty, making them vulnerable to misleading narratives. Let's focus on fostering trust in credible sources, promoting media literacy, and ensuring informed decision-making in upcoming elections and beyond. Want to dive deeper? Evidence is extremely important for a call to action. A new study by Pass The Mic and the University of Strathclyde, funded by the Equal Media and Culture Centre at Engender Scotland, underscores a decrease in the representation of women of colour in the Scottish media. A media monitoring during the UK general election campaign coverage in Scotland showed that only 1.5% of people in Scottish media stories about the election were women of colour, a decrease from their 2021 study on the Scottish Parliament elections (where WOC made up 2.1% of people in the news). This study demonstrates how crucial it is to transform rhetoric into tangible actions. The media landscape must reflect the diversity of our society. Political force and influence: Public policy in the United States is shaped by various forces, including polls, election results, interest groups, and institutions. Concerns have grown about deep-pocketed donors playing an unprecedented role in American politics, with research from Harvard and the University of Sydney finding the US ranked 26th out of 66 countries in election integrity . This raises questions about who shapes public policies and whether voters still have meaningful input, or if the government prioritizes economic elites and interest groups with strong fundraising capabilities https://lnkd.in/dHDZrTqs #Politics #Policy #Government #ElectionIntegrity #Democracy #PublicPolicy #SocialJustice

ECPS Commentary Shifting Political Landscapes: The Rise and Fall of Opposition Parties Amidst Fidesz’s Dominance in Hungary The EP election results in Hungary indicate interesting dynamics. The governing Fidesz party achieved a somewhat pyrrhic victory. Although it won 44.82% of the votes, making it the winner, this result is the worst the party has ever achieved in its EP election history. The big winner of the EP election is Magyar’s Tisza party, which received 29.6% of the votes and may send seven representatives to the EP. Given that the party practically did not exist in the minds of voters a few months prior, becoming the largest opposition party was a significant success. A big question now is, in which faction of the EP will the Hungarian parties find their political home? By Robert Csehi* For the first time in history, the European Parliamentary elections in Hungary were held simultaneously with local municipal elections. This dual campaign posed a unique challenge for political actors, as they had to address both local and European issues in their messages. However, in this summary, I will focus solely on the results of the European Parliamentary election. The governing party, Fidesz, in coalition with the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), launched its European Parliament campaign in late April and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán encapsulated the party’s core message with the slogan: ‘no migration, no gender, no war.’ This slogan was supposed to reflect an antagonistic relationship between the position of Fidesz and that of ‘Brussels.’ Orbán claimed to stop illegal migration into Hungary despite the EU’s alleged liberal policies and called for resistance against ‘gender ideology’ in the name of safeguarding Hungarian children against the alleged LGBTQ+ propaganda. While these two elements featured in the social mediamessages of the governing party in the beginning, the third message, ‘no war,’ gained ever-increasing attention in Orbán’s campaign and ultimately eclipsed the other two. 🚨 Unique Study Shows Severe Under-Representation of Women of Colour in Scottish Media’s 2024 UK General Election Coverage Recent research by Pass and the University of Strathclyde, funded by the Equal Media and Culture Centre at Engender Scotland, reveals a significant drop in the representation of women of colour in Scottish media election coverage—from 2.1% in 2021 to just 1.5% in 2024. Talat Yaqoob FRSE Yakoob, founder of Pass The Mic, emphasised the need for action: "The news industry must go beyond acknowledging this issue to actually addressing it. This means actively identifying and commissioning women of colour to share their expertise and experiences. People in Scotland deserve to see themselves represented in the news." This study underscores a long-standing issue in Scottish media and politics: the severe under-representation of women of colour. It’s clear that rhetoric alone won't suffice—concrete steps must be taken to foster an inclusive and representative media landscape. Key findings of the study: * White men make up 65.5% of all anchors, journalists, and reporters in Scottish media stories about the election and are 60.9% of all people in Scottish election news. *Women of colour made up only 1.1% of all anchors, journalists and reporters in Scottish media stories about the election. Of 216 newspaper commentary and opinion articles coded, only 4 (1.9%) were written by women of colour. *Only 1.5% of people in Scottish media stories about the election were women of colour, a decrease from the 2021 study on the Scottish Parliament elections (where WOC made up 2.1% of people in the news). The under-representation of women of colour in Scottish media and politics is a long-standing issue that requires actions beyond rhetoric to change. By not only recognising but addressing these disparities, Scotland can move towards a more inclusive and representative media landscape. Read the full article on our website: https://lnkd.in/g7QbtCTn
