Public London: Activating the City is a free temporary exhibition on display at the London Centre, curated by the NLA. It showcases everything that is wonderful and challenging about public realm activation. Hassell has a few local and global projects featured as inspiration. In June, I was invited to speak at the launch symposium alongside Neal Shah (Greystar), David Fearon (AtkinsRéalis), Manijeh Verghese, and Ruchi Chakravarty. The event also included valuable insights from Samantha Jade (Saff) Williams, Sarah Castle, Clarisse Tavin, and Synthia Griffin. One of my key takeaways from the discussion was the importance of gathering evidence before, during, and after installing a temporary intervention. By consistently measuring both qualitative and quantitative indicators, short-term projects can significantly influence long-term outcomes. Moreover, it is crucial to approach an activation project with a clear purpose. What are you testing or prompting with a temporary public experience that cannot be achieved otherwise? Much like a stone thrown into water, a temporary installation may only be visible on the surface for a short time, but it can create ripples that reshape the surrounding landscape. 🔗 Read about our 5-year placemaking impact study with IPUT Real Estate Dublin here: https://lnkd.in/eg8vwKe6 🔗 Find out more about Hassell's installations and interventions here: https://lnkd.in/eYvQ2teB

Why the first moments of your speech are so important. Some tips from Catherine.
The greeting! It is one of the most important things you do in a speech. You can see its power here in this photo. My tip? Say hello first, thank people for attending, for selecting your breakout session, attending the conference, inviting you to speak to them, attending through rain or traffic whatever is relevant. People have made time to listen and when you thank them first it offers them respect. Don't rush it. It shouldn't be too long, but it should be genuine because really, we are thankful, they turned up. This is a good thing. I suggest do this before introducing yourself and moving onto the content of the presentation. You will get tips here every day in the run up to our Canberra and Sydney #WomenSpeaking workshops. If you want to learn more and attend the 1-day workshops, links are below #Canberra 30/4 at National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (great conference venue right there) and #Sydney 8/5 The Women's College, within The University of Sydney (super modern, award-winning building, high-tech stage and lighting are features of this space). Canberra https://lnkd.in/ghcer9gM Sydney https://lnkd.in/grabY4Yx This is small group training led by experts. See you there. Canberra registrations must close Thursday.

The largest challenge lies with the systems innovation in public service that’s where people, their livelihood and meaning as well as all tangible and intangible stakes and flows come together. We have seen many project and experiments working this but what about the programs of projects, the large movements of systems innovation? What can we learn from those that happen and how to upscale the smaller movements? What common hurdles do we see? Is it budget? Is it a glass cieling of change stopping managers and directors in the public sector? How can we liquify that to have the large impactful movements emerge. Some of the emerging questions for the conference.
We are really looking forward to hosting our first conference in London in just under two months focusing on systems innovation in the public sector in collaboration with Si London Hub. The lineup of speakers is taking shape, take a look at this slide to see who is coming. You can find full event info and booking here: https://lnkd.in/ezzistvx Mariell Juhlin Isaac Reilly Toby Lowe Rowan Conway Maarten Lens-FitzGerald Joss Colchester Florian Schwendinger Benjamin P. Taylor Karen den Hertog Louis Klein Dr Rachel Lilley John Mortimer Tim Hobbs About the event: Systems Innovation Public Sector Conference will be a unique in-person one-day gathering for systems thinkers, innovators, and change-makers in the public sector taking place in London on Feb 14th. Through a combination of presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and open spaces hosted by people working on systems innovation in the public sector, the event offers the opportunity to connect, discuss, and learn about the state of systems innovation in government today. Who should join The conference is for anyone working in or around government at all levels from local to national to international and across all departments for you to learn about a new set of ideas and approaches for tackling wicked challenges, while also making valuable new connections. This event is hosted by the Si Governance and London hub as we believe these "systems approach" now offer huge potential for really changing the way we do things in the public sector at a scale relevant to the most significant challenges we face as civil servants.

Delighted to be presenting as part of a very exciting programme of speakers at Healthy City Design International Congress 2024! I’ll be sharing my work on “Compassionate Places” – a new transdisciplinary model for a healthy, human-connected design and placemaking. This aims to reframe how places are seen and shaped - by responding to our human needs, human experience and prioritising the quality of places. Ie How our surroundings impact people's lives. By drawing from different disciplines and areas, like neuroscience, environmental psychology, sociology and public health, the approach and method aims to embed knowledge and research on how places affect people into spatial design. And generally change how places are being made, so they can better support people and communities to flourish and thrive. #HealthyCities #HolisticApproaches #CompassionatePlaces #PlaceQuality #ConsciousDesign #MentalHealth #NeuroArchitecture #Togetherness #Inclusivity #Equity #SpatialJustice #Innovation #Collaboration #DesignforChange #Planning #Placemaking

6moBringing city goers and residents to a state of Realisation is, I think, a major effect of temporary installations or art interventions. They realise the value of space hitherto undervalued. Interstitial spaces in congested cities like Lagos, Nigeria: spaces like under bridges transformed by murals, horticulture and football play areas and lit up at night creates that sense of Realisation.
