For #InternationalWomenDay, I thought it would be great to recognize women who are not just shaping the future of #AI, but have been pivotal in laying the foundation for #AIpractices across industries. Their tenure in the field is remarkable, many with decades long careers laying the foundation for AI. Yet, they are still often overlooked in favor of their male counterparts, many of whom just recently began working in AI in the last few years. After recently reading some articles about gender bias in #GenAI, I came across some more-than-a-year-old posts from 2 true AI experts: Hadas Kotek, PhD and Ravit Dotan, PhD. Drs. Kotek and Dotan showed that when ChatGPT, at least in 2023, was faced with making assumptions on the gender of a doctor and a nurse, it assumed the doctor was a man and the nurse was a woman. After reading their posts, I decided to test out not only the latest version of ChatGPT, but Claude and Gemini as well. And I'm sad to report that the issue continues. The chatbots* consistently concluded that if an assumption needed to be made, judges, CEOs, and doctors must be men, while stenographers, secretaries, and nurses must be women. I attempted some tests on racial bias but couldn't figure out prompts that would adequately test them. That said - I'm not here to argue that generative AI is doomed or that the people behind these chatbots are evil anti-feminists. I'm a huge fan of GenAI, and I continue to be after discovering the issues in this post. I'm raising these issues - or more accurately, amplifying the issues raised by Drs. Kotek and Dotan - so we can be aware of generative AI's limitations. So we take caution not to be overly reliant on them, and to account for these inherent biases. And so that we remember that, even apart from generative AI, relying purely on what has happened in the past to make decisions about the future is bound to have an adverse impact on people who may have been discriminated against in the past. Even if we're not evil. *Claude seemed to do the least bad - on 1 of the 6 one gender prompts I used (not shown in the image), it concluded that there was no way to determine and encouraged me not to make assumptions based on gender, and almost always did the same for questions of race. #GenerativeAI #implicitbias #genderbias

I wrote this edition of Les Glorieuses' The Evidence newsletter (in which I cover the latest research into gender inequality) hoping that my scattered and ill-defined worries about the development of AI would be proved wrong by researching and writing about it. I ended up speaking to six experts for this story. My hopes weren't exactly realised. “If we treat AI as we’ve treated all major technologies for the last century, then I am not too optimistic," Bhargav Srinivasa Desikan told me. AI is undeniably sexist, and continuing on its current trajectory the technology will entrench and deepen this and other existing inequalities. Top line? We need to learn to put people before profit. Thankfully there are many inspirational people working within the field to do so. Thank you to María Pérez Ortiz, Elaine Wan, Revi Sterling, Dr. Kutoma Wakunuma, Erin Young and Bhargav for sharing your insights and advice with me and for doing such important work. 🔍 Challenging Systematic Prejudices in AI 🔍 A bit shocked by this UNESCO and IRCAI report on bias against women and girls found in LLMs like OpenAI’s GPT-2, ChatGPT, and Meta’s Llama 2. 1. Persistent Gender Biases: Despite advancements, LLMs still reflect deep-seated biases, associating female names with traditional roles (e.g., "home," "family") and male names with career-oriented terms (e.g., "business," "executive"). 2. Negative Content: Models like Llama 2 generated negative content about women and LGBTQ+ individuals in a significant number of instances. For example, Llama 2 produced sexist content 20% of the time when prompted with gendered sentences and negative content about gay subjects in 70% of instances! 3. Cultural Stereotypes: LLMs showed a tendency to create more varied descriptions for men and stereotypical, often negative, portrayals for women. For instance, British women’s roles include more stereotypical and controversial occupations such as "prostitute, model, and waitress", appearing in 30% of the total texts generated. This report underscores the critical need to address biases in AI at both the data and deployment levels, focusing on diverse and inclusive datasets, continuous bias monitoring, and transparency.
